Ask the book

2022-23 edition Ask a direct question about this edition of the book — who, how many, how common, which group more — and it is answered with a table computed on this page from the edition’s index: the season line, height and age, the on-ice percentiles, the grades and the traits read out of every report. Ask for a view on named players — what a comparison comes down to, what makes a man — and you get the book’s reading of their own pages, and only those. The model turns your question into a query and phrases the result, or reads the pages it is handed; it never originates a figure, and an answer carrying a figure that is on neither the table nor the pages is withheld. It does not forecast, and it says so when a question is outside what the book holds.

Tables are computed on this page from the 2022-23 edition’s index; readings rest on the players’ own pages; the model never counts. Twenty questions an hour.

The read

the numbers, and the eye

The best goaltending in the league, worth twenty-three and a half goals, in front of the 16th-best possession and the 4th-worst penalty kill.

Who this names 8 of 23 on the roster · 38% of their five-on-five minutes details

Both columns above are searched, and a name counts on the same terms the page links it: in full always, by surname only when one man in the edition wears it. Nothing here says who ought to be named — only who was, so the weighting can be seen rather than guessed at.

Not named here: Ethan Bear, Collin Delia, Travis Dermott, Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Conor Garland, Nils Hoglander, Bo Horvat, Dakota Joshua, Curtis Lazar, Ilya Mikheyev, Tyler Myers, Lane Pederson, Vasily Podkolzin, Tucker Poolman, Riley Stillman.

What the Quant Says

40-30-12, 92 points, 18th in the league. 249 goals for, 18th; 236 against, 8th.

And 16th in attempt share at 49.9 per cent, 19th in chance share at 49.0. The structure is the middle of the league in both directions.

Finishing rated minus-3.9, 24th and goaltending plus-23.5 — 1st in the league. The five-on-five ledger: goals for 156 against an expectation of 159.9, goals against 143 against an expectation of 166.5.

Four short in front and twenty-three and a half fewer against than the model asked. The second number is the club, and it has one name attached to it.

Two hundred and thirty-six goals against is 8th in hockey off the 15th-ranked chance suppression and the 4th-worst penalty kill. Everything good about this season came from the crease.

What the Scout Says

Vancouver conceded 143 goals at five-on-five against an expectation of 166.5. Twenty-three and a half fewer than the model asked, and the club's goaltending rating is plus-23.5 — first in the league, and the two figures are the same number twice.

Everything else about this season is average or worse. 16th in attempt share, 19th in chances, 18th in goals for, 24th in finishing, 26th on the penalty kill. Ninety-two points and eighteenth place is what that structure earns when one man saves twenty-three goals out of it.

Thatcher Demko played sixty-four of the eighty-two games at .9146 on 1,967 shots — the third-largest workload of the fifty-three goaltenders who played twenty-five. He is 26, and his last two seasons are .9149 and .9146 across three thousand shots between them. That is as settled as a young goaltender's number gets, and the club is entirely dependent on it.

The blue line is where the tracking finds the strangest thing in this chapter. Luke Schenn was measured the 5th-slowest of the 192 defencemen the tracking covers and Kyle Burroughs the 3rd-slowest. Schenn hits at the 3rd-most of 202 and Burroughs the 5th-most. Two of the four slowest men at the position in the league are on one roster, and both of them are among the five hardest hitters at it.

Quinn Hughes is the counterweight and the opposite extreme. He recorded the fewest hits and the fewest blocks of all 202 defencemen, at twenty-five minutes a night, with sixty-eight points.

Four of the club's forwards are in the bottom eighth of the league for ground covered per minute — Brock Boeser 15th-least of 365, Tanner Pearson 21st, J.T. Miller 32nd and Elias Pettersson 46th — which is the second time in this batch that pattern has appeared, and the record cannot say whether it is coaching or coincidence.

How they were used

2021-22 · 82 games

Measured from shift charts at five-on-five, not projected. Units are built from the strongest partnership outward and ordered by how much they were used; the percentage is the share of the first player’s five-on-five ice time spent alongside each linemate. A low number means the club never settled on a combination. Players who have gone are marked — either to another club, or off an NHL roster altogether, which covers retirement and an unsigned summer alike.
