The read
the numbers, and the eyeSeventh in the league at suppressing chances and 30th at creating them, 28th on the power play, and seventeen goals of goaltending — a 90-point season spent at war with itself.
Who this names 13 of 24 on the roster · 65% of their five-on-five minutes details
Both columns above are searched, and a name counts on the same terms the page links it: in full always, by surname only when one man in the edition wears it. Nothing here says who ought to be named — only who was, so the weighting can be seen rather than guessed at.
Not named here: Teddy Blueger, Jake DeBrusk, Thatcher Demko, Nils Hoglander, Filip Hronek, Linus Karlsson, Jonathan Lekkerimäki, Elias Pettersson, Elias Pettersson, Aatu Räty, Max Sasson.
What the Quant Says
90 points, 38-30-14, and a spring outside the playoffs a year after 109 points and a Game 7.
The club was 7th in the league at suppressing chances at even strength and 30th at creating them. It scored 145 goals at five-on-five against an expectation of 136 and conceded 158 against 141. The goaltending finished 17 goals worse than the chances faced, 27th in the league. The power play was 28th.
Every one of those is a real problem and none of them is the story.
The story is that the club spent the season at war with itself. Its two best forwards were publicly at odds for most of a calendar year; one of them was traded to the Rangers in January for Filip Chytil, Victor Mancini and a first-round pick, and the other produced 45 points in 64 games and took 109 shots. A 102-point season two years ago and a 45-point season now, in the first year of an eight-year contract, is not a hockey problem that a chance model will explain.
What is left is genuinely good and genuinely narrow. Quinn Hughes had 76 points in 68 games and is the best skater at his position in the league, and the question hanging over the franchise is whether he intends to stay. Conor Garland at 165 pounds produced 50 points and the best two-way record of any forward on the roster. Kiefer Sherwood recorded more hits than any player in the history of the statistic. Kevin Lankinen was signed off the street in September and was the reason the season lasted until March.
The summer was modest. Marcus Pettersson and Drew O'Connor were acquired at the deadline and Pettersson signed six years. Brock Boeser re-signed. David Kampf and Pierre-Olivier Joseph were added. Pius Suter went to St. Louis, Dakota Joshua to Toronto, Danton Heinen to Pittsburgh, Carson Soucy to the Rangers and Arturs Silovs to Pittsburgh.
Thirtieth in the league at creating chances is what has to change, and nothing added in the summer changes it.
What the Scout Says
The best skater at his position in the league at 180 pounds, the lightest forward in this edition, and the most physical winger in it.
Quinn Hughes changes direction at full speed without losing the puck and is essentially impossible to pressure in his own zone. He is 5-10 and 180 pounds, he plays twenty-six minutes a night, and he does not clear his crease and never will. That has been the unanswered question about this blue line for six years.
Conor Garland is 5-10 and 165 pounds — among the lightest players in the league — and he holds the puck below the goal line against defencemen sixty pounds heavier. He took 52 penalty minutes in 81 games and he is an irritant by trade.
Kiefer Sherwood recorded more hits last season than any player in the history of the statistic, on 35 penalty minutes — which says it is clean rather than provocative.
The size is on the blue line and it is old. Tyler Myers is 6-8 and 35, Derek Forbort 6-4 and 33, Marcus Pettersson 6-5 and 174 pounds. The one genuinely heavy young body is Victor Mancini at 6-3 and 229, and he had the worst chance share in this chapter.

How they were used
2024-25 · 78 games
Measured from shift charts at five-on-five, not projected. Units are built from the strongest partnership outward and ordered by how much they were used; the percentage is the share of the first player’s five-on-five ice time spent alongside each linemate. A low number means the club never settled on a combination. Players who have gone are marked — either to another club, or off an NHL roster altogether, which covers retirement and an unsigned summer alike.
