The read
the numbers, and the eyeTwenty-fourth in chance share, fourth in finishing, twenty-ninth in goaltending — and the highest shooting percentage in this book.
Who this names 10 of 24 on the roster · 45% of their five-on-five minutes details
Both columns above are searched, and a name counts on the same terms the page links it: in full always, by surname only when one man in the edition wears it. Nothing here says who ought to be named — only who was, so the weighting can be seen rather than guessed at.
Not named here: Nils Aman, Anthony Beauvillier, Brock Boeser, Thatcher Demko, Conor Garland, Phillip Di Giuseppe, Nils Hoglander, Filip Hronek, Dakota Joshua, Ilya Mikheyev, J.T. Miller, Tyler Myers, Vasily Podkolzin, Jack Studnicka.
What the Quant Says
38-37-7, 83 points, 22nd in the league and sixth in the Pacific.
276 goals for, 13th. 298 against, 24th. Twenty-third in shot-attempt share, 24th in chance share, 26th at creating chances at even strength, 18th at suppressing them, 10th on the power play and 25th on the penalty kill.
At five-on-five: 169 goals scored against 152.6 expected, and 192 conceded against 171.8. The finishing was 4th in the league at plus-16.4 and the goaltending 29th at minus-20.2.
That is a club that played like the twenty-fourth-best team in hockey, finished twenty-second, and would have finished lower still without the fourth-best finishing in the league. Both percentages moved, in opposite directions, and neither is a thing a club gets to keep.
Andrei Kuzmenko scored 39 goals on 143 shots in his first NHL season at 26. Elias Pettersson had 102 points and 5 shorthanded goals. Quinn Hughes had 69 assists at five foot ten. J.T. Miller scored 8 goals from beyond 40 feet on 57 shots.
Ian Cole, Carson Soucy, Pius Suter, Sam Lafferty, Teddy Blueger, Mark Friedman and Casey DeSmith arrive. Bo Horvat, Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Luke Schenn, Kyle Burroughs, Curtis Lazar, Spencer Martin and Collin Delia do not.
The captain was traded in January for a winger and a first-round pick, and the summer bought four bottom-six forwards and two defencemen in their thirties. Nothing on this roster addresses the twenty-fourth-best chance share in the league; a good deal of it is a bet that the goaltending was the problem.
What the Scout Says
Sixty-nine assists at five foot ten, the highest shooting percentage in this book, and the twenty-ninth-ranked goaltending in the league.
Vancouver was 24th in chance share and 4th at finishing. Its goaltending came in 20.2 goals worse than the chances it faced, 29th. Andrei Kuzmenko shot 27.27 per cent and Quinn Hughes had 76 points.
Two of the three best forwards in this chapter and the best young defenceman are already here. What is not here is a shift that holds the puck, and no arrival this summer changes that.

How they were used
2022-23 · 82 games
Measured from shift charts at five-on-five, not projected. Units are built from the strongest partnership outward and ordered by how much they were used; the percentage is the share of the first player’s five-on-five ice time spent alongside each linemate. A low number means the club never settled on a combination. Players who have gone are marked — either to another club, or off an NHL roster altogether, which covers retirement and an unsigned summer alike.
