Ask the book

2024-25 edition Ask a direct question about this edition of the book — who, how many, how common, which group more — and it is answered with a table computed on this page from the edition’s index: the season line, height and age, the on-ice percentiles, the grades and the traits read out of every report. Ask for a view on named players — what a comparison comes down to, what makes a man — and you get the book’s reading of their own pages, and only those. The model turns your question into a query and phrases the result, or reads the pages it is handed; it never originates a figure, and an answer carrying a figure that is on neither the table nor the pages is withheld. It does not forecast, and it says so when a question is outside what the book holds.

Tables are computed on this page from the 2024-25 edition’s index; readings rest on the players’ own pages; the model never counts. Twenty questions an hour.

The read

the numbers, and the eye

Ninety-two points from a 5-10 defenceman, and the third-largest finishing surplus in the league.

Who this names 13 of 25 on the roster · 53% of their five-on-five minutes details

Both columns above are searched, and a name counts on the same terms the page links it: in full always, by surname only when one man in the edition wears it. Nothing here says who ought to be named — only who was, so the weighting can be seen rather than guessed at.

Not named here: Nils Aman, Teddy Blueger, Mark Friedman, Conor Garland, Phillip Di Giuseppe, Nils Hoglander, Filip Hronek, Dakota Joshua, Noah Juulsen, Tyler Myers, Carson Soucy, Pius Suter.

What the Quant Says

50-23-9, 109 points, 6th in the league and first in the Pacific.

279 goals for, seventh in hockey. 223 against, fifth. Sixteenth at creating chances at even strength, sixth at preventing them, eighth on the power play and tenth on the penalty kill.

At five-on-five: 187 goals scored against 163.8 expected, and 137 conceded against 147.7. Twenty-three goals of finishing gained and eleven of goaltending gained on top of it. The finishing was 3rd and the goaltending 8th.

Quinn Hughes had 17 goals and 75 assists for 92 points in all 82 games — the most points and the most assists of any defenceman in this edition — at 5-10 and 180 pounds. J.T. Miller had 103 points, Elias Pettersson 89 and Brock Boeser 40 goals. Thatcher Demko won 35 games in 51 starts with a .9176.

Jake DeBrusk, Daniel Sprong, Danton Heinen, Kiefer Sherwood, Vincent Desharnais, Erik Brannstrom, Derek Forbort and Kevin Lankinen all arrive. Ian Cole, Casey DeSmith, Ilya Mikheyev, Andrei Kuzmenko and Sam Lafferty do not.

This is a very good hockey club with one number in it that will not repeat. Thirty-four goals of finishing and goaltending above what the chances were worth is the third-largest and eighth-largest such figures in the league on the same roster, and the chance creation underneath them was seventeenth.

What the Scout Says

The best offensive defenceman in this edition, playing behind the third-best finishing in the league.

Quinn Hughes is 5-10 and 180 and had 92 points and 75 assists in all 82 games — more of each than any other defenceman in this edition. The club finished 23.2 goals above its expected total at five-on-five, third in the league. Thatcher Demko won 35 games in 51 appearances.

Sixth at preventing chances and sixteenth at creating them, and seventh in goals scored anyway. Everything good about this club is real; some of how much of it there was, is not.

How they were used

2023-24 · 82 games

Measured from shift charts at five-on-five, not projected. Units are built from the strongest partnership outward and ordered by how much they were used; the percentage is the share of the first player’s five-on-five ice time spent alongside each linemate. A low number means the club never settled on a combination. Players who have gone are marked — either to another club, or off an NHL roster altogether, which covers retirement and an unsigned summer alike.
