The read
the numbers, and the eyeTwenty-ninth in chance share and thirty-first at suppressing them — and the Calder-winning rookie defenceman is the man every Detroit forward did worse alongside.
Who this names 19 of 27 on the roster · 74% of their five-on-five minutes details
Both columns above are searched, and a name counts on the same terms the page links it: in full always, by surname only when one man in the edition wears it. Nothing here says who ought to be named — only who was, so the weighting can be seen rather than guessed at.
Not named here: Robby Fabbri, Gustav Lindstrom, Alex Nedeljkovic, Jordan Oesterle, Michael Rasmussen, Pius Suter, Jakub Vrana, Filip Zadina.
What the Quant Says
32-40-10, 74 points, 25th in the league and seventh in the Atlantic.
230 goals for, 25th. 312 against, 30th. 28th in shot-attempt share at five-on-five at 46.1 per cent and 29th in chance share at 45.4. 25th at creating chances at even strength and 31st at suppressing them.
At five-on-five: 159 goals scored against 157.4 expected, and 203 conceded against 189.0. The finishing was 19th at plus-1.6 and the goaltending 25th at minus-14. Almost nothing about this season was unlucky. The club was outplayed, the goals came out roughly where the chances said at one end, and the crease cost it fourteen at the other.
Moritz Seider had 50 points in his first NHL season at 23:02 a night. Dylan Larkin had 69 in 71 games. Tyler Bertuzzi had 30 goals in 68. Lucas Raymond had 57 points at 19 and a minus-32, the 5th-worst of the 611 skaters who played 40 games.
Nick Leddy has gone to St Louis, Marc Staal to Florida, Vladislav Namestnikov to Tampa Bay, Sam Gagner to Winnipeg, Thomas Greiss to St Louis and Magnus Hellberg to Ottawa. Danny DeKeyser and Calvin Pickard are off the roster.
Eleven men arrive: Ville Husso from St Louis, Ben Chiarot from Florida, Andrew Copp from the Rangers, David Perron from St Louis, Dominik Kubalik from Chicago, Olli Maatta from Los Angeles, Robert Hagg, Alex Chiasson from Vancouver, Matt Luff, and Oskar Sundqvist and Jake Walman, who arrived from St Louis inside last season.
This is the largest single-summer intake in the book and every one of the arrivals is 26 or older. A club with a 19-year-old, a 21-year-old and a 22-year-old in its top nine has bought a middle.
What the Scout Says
Three young forwards, two defencemen who read opposite ways, and eleven men over 26 bought to fill in around them.
Dylan Larkin is genuinely one of the quickest men in the league and he gets there often — the 29th-fastest top speed of the 365 forwards the tracking covers. Tyler Bertuzzi is the reverse and it is the more surprising file: he almost never sprints and he covers less ground than nine-tenths of the league, and he scored thirty goals from the slot. He does not get there fast, he gets there and stays.
Lucas Raymond is not a fast skater by the league's own measurement and he does not cover unusual ground, which is the most surprising line in his file and worth stating without dressing it up: the fourth pick of his draft produced 57 points in the bottom third of the league for speed.
The blue line is the argument. Moritz Seider has the best turnover ledger of any Detroit defenceman and every forward's share falls with him on the ice. Filip Hronek has the 20th-fewest blocks of the 202 qualified defencemen and every forward's share rises. Fifty points is a real season and the chance share is a real problem, and this book cannot tell you which one is the player.
Underneath, a fourth line of men who hit and do not create. Adam Erne, Joe Veleno and Givani Smith are three versions of the same idea and the club dressed all of them.
The roster
No measured season behind two of them: Ville Husso and Alex Nedeljkovic. Their pages carry an older stat line and a judgment, and nothing from 2021-22.

How they were used
2021-22 · 82 games
Measured from shift charts at five-on-five, not projected. Units are built from the strongest partnership outward and ordered by how much they were used; the percentage is the share of the first player’s five-on-five ice time spent alongside each linemate. A low number means the club never settled on a combination. Players who have gone are marked — either to another club, or off an NHL roster altogether, which covers retirement and an unsigned summer alike.
