The read
the numbers, and the eyeTwenty-eighth in shot share and ninth in goals scored — the best finishing in the league by a distance, and it still was not enough to make the playoffs.
Who this names 18 of 22 on the roster · 89% of their five-on-five minutes details
Both columns above are searched, and a name counts on the same terms the page links it: in full always, by surname only when one man in the edition wears it. Nothing here says who ought to be named — only who was, so the weighting can be seen rather than guessed at.
Not named here: Christian Fischer, Ville Husso, Alex Lyon, Olli Maatta.
What the Quant Says
91 points, 41-32-9, and seventeenth in the league.
The club took 46.0 per cent of the shot attempts at five-on-five, 28th, and 45.9 per cent of the expected goals, 27th. It scored 278 goals, ninth in the league.
The bridge between those numbers is 28.6 goals of finishing above expectation at five-on-five, the largest surplus in the league. No club in this edition shot like Detroit did last season. Lucas Raymond converted 19.02 per cent, J.T. Compher 17.59, Dylan Larkin 14.93, Vladimir Tarasenko 14.84, Joe Veleno 13.95 and Alex DeBrincat 11.39 — six regulars above 11 per cent on a club whose chances came from nowhere in particular.
It was still not enough. The goaltending came in 14.1 goals worse than the chances faced, 25th, and the penalty kill was 28th at 8.130 expected goals against per 60. A club that shot better than anybody in hockey finished seventeenth.
What is genuinely good here is young and there is not much of it. Lucas Raymond is 22 with 174 points in 238 games. Moritz Seider is 23, plays 22:22 a night and has 113 assists in 246 games. Dylan Larkin is 28 and has 506 points in 652. After that the roster is old: Patrick Kane is 35, Jeff Petry 36, Cam Talbot 37, Vladimir Tarasenko 32, Ben Chiarot 33, Erik Gustafsson 32, Justin Holl 32 and Austin Watson 32.
The summer bought experience. Vladimir Tarasenko came from Florida, Erik Gustafsson from New York, Cam Talbot from Los Angeles, Tyler Motte and Austin Watson from Tampa Bay and William Lagesson from Anaheim. Jake Walman went to San Jose, Shayne Gostisbehere to Carolina, David Perron to Ottawa, Daniel Sprong to Vancouver, Robby Fabbri to Anaheim and James Reimer to Anaheim.
Six of the men on this roster were born in Michigan — Dylan Larkin, Alex DeBrincat, Jeff Petry, Andrew Copp, Tyler Motte and Austin Watson — which is three times as many as any other club in this edition carries, and on a roster this thin it is worth saying that somebody is still choosing to come home.
The finishing will regress. Cam Talbot is the reason to think the club stays where it is anyway.
What the Scout Says
A 6-6 centre, a 5-8 winger, and the most penalised man in this edition.
Alex DeBrincat is 5-8 and 180 and took 237 shots — more than anybody on the club. Patrick Kane is 5-10 and 176 pounds at 35 with 1,284 career points. Tyler Motte is 5-10.
Michael Rasmussen is 6-6 and 222 and one of the six tallest forwards in this edition. Justin Holl is 6-4, Austin Watson 6-4, Ben Chiarot 6-3 and 222, and Jeff Petry 6-3.
Austin Watson took 93 penalty minutes in 33 games — the highest rate of any player in this edition — and has 705 in 515 across his career. Ben Chiarot has 458 in 642. Those two are the whole of the club's hostility and one of them plays seven minutes a night.
Moritz Seider is 6-2 and 210 and plays more than anybody, and Lucas Raymond is 5-11 and 186 and is the best player on the roster.

How they were used
2023-24 · 82 games
Measured from shift charts at five-on-five, not projected. Units are built from the strongest partnership outward and ordered by how much they were used; the percentage is the share of the first player’s five-on-five ice time spent alongside each linemate. A low number means the club never settled on a combination. Players who have gone are marked — either to another club, or off an NHL roster altogether, which covers retirement and an unsigned summer alike.
