Ask the book

2022-23 edition Ask a direct question about this edition of the book — who, how many, how common, which group more — and it is answered with a table computed on this page from the edition’s index: the season line, height and age, the on-ice percentiles, the grades and the traits read out of every report. Ask for a view on named players — what a comparison comes down to, what makes a man — and you get the book’s reading of their own pages, and only those. The model turns your question into a query and phrases the result, or reads the pages it is handed; it never originates a figure, and an answer carrying a figure that is on neither the table nor the pages is withheld. It does not forecast, and it says so when a question is outside what the book holds.

Tables are computed on this page from the 2022-23 edition’s index; readings rest on the players’ own pages; the model never counts. Twenty questions an hour.

This Season So Far

The 2022-23 season has not started. The empty row above is his, and both it and this paragraph fill in on their own from the morning after he first plays: what he has done, what it is worth against his own last season, and the run he is on when the two disagree.

Last Season

17 goals and 13 assists in 56 games — 30 points, a minus-23 and 35 penalty minutes at 17:20 a night, the 67th percentile among forwards.

46.8 per cent of the expected goals at five-on-five over 778 minutes, the 23rd percentile. His ice went 29-35 against an expectation of 32.29-36.67.

The Finesse Game

Seventeen goals on 123 shots is 13.8 per cent, the 72nd percentile, off 7.60 shots per 60 at the 57th. 54 per cent from the slot at a median of 23 feet — the shot chart of a scoring forward, and the conversion is above average without being unsustainable.

2:46 a night on the power play is the 80th percentile with 27 per cent of his points there, the 75th.

1.62 even-strength points per 60 is the 39th percentile. For a man playing seventeen minutes on the second line, that is the number that undersells him least kindly.

0.80 takeaways per 60 is the 11th-fewest of the 393 qualified forwards, against 1.30 giveaways at the 36th. He is careful and he does not take the puck off anyone.

94.5 mph is the 81st percentile — a genuinely hard shot, which at 5-11 and 185 is the more interesting half of the finishing.

The Physical Game

5-11 and 185. 5.32 hits per 60 is the 64th percentile among forwards and 1.17 blocks the 23rd. He hits more than his size suggests and blocks nothing.

1.05 penalties drawn per 60 is the 77th percentile against 0.99 taken at the 78th — thirty-five minutes in fifty-six games, and the net is a wash. He plays on the edge of the rules in both directions.

21.9 mph is the 21st percentile and 9.16 miles per 60 is the 51st-lowest of 365. Slow, and covering little ground, at seventeen minutes a night.

The Intangibles

Twenty-first overall in 2014, and 302 NHL games at 26 with a career minus-75.

Six NHL seasons and never once seventy-three games — 72, 51, 32, 61, 30, 56, with 2017-18 missing from the record entirely. The availability is the record and there is no season in it that argues otherwise.

With Pius Suter he took 49.8 per cent of the chances over 794 attempts and 43.3 without him, which is the largest with-and-without gap on his page and points at Suter rather than at him.

Seventeen goals in fifty-six games is a twenty-five-goal pace. He has never got near a full season to prove it, and a club that finished 25th in goals is entitled to keep finding out.

The eye and the numbers

The two rank him within 12 points of one another. It was written for a back edition, with the seasons that followed already known. Neither the agreement nor the gap says anything about the eye, and this report is excluded from the club-level comparison for the same reason.

Both bars are percentiles among the 649 skaters in this edition with a report and enough ice time. The report bar ranks the mean of the grades above — 53 on their own scale — against every other report's mean. The numbers bar ranks his share of expected goals. A gap is a disagreement about where he belongs, not two scales talking past each other.

A top speed is a season's best, and a man who takes more shifts gets more tries at one; the percentile is the feed's own, against every skater, and says less between a top-pair defenceman and a fourth-line wing than it does between two men in the same job. The counts are shown per game for the same reason.

49.8% together, 43.3% for him apart and 45.8% for Suter apart. Both were worse apart, so whatever the two of them had together was doing real work.

Expected-goal share while both were on the ice, and for each man in the minutes he played without the other. Apart is the pair subtracted from his own totals. It does not settle who was carrying whom — apart from each other, both were still playing with somebody — but it does say whether the share travelled when the pairing broke up.
