The read
the numbers, and the eyeA ninth straight season without playoff hockey, 26th in finishing, 28th on the penalty kill — and three forwards at 70 points or better.
Who this names 10 of 21 on the roster · 62% of their five-on-five minutes details
Both columns above are searched, and a name counts on the same terms the page links it: in full always, by surname only when one man in the edition wears it. Nothing here says who ought to be named — only who was, so the weighting can be seen rather than guessed at.
Not named here: Mason Appleton, Jonatan Berggren, Jacob Bernard-Docker, J.T. Compher, Andrew Copp, John Gibson, Erik Gustafsson, Albert Johansson, James van Riemsdyk, Elmer Soderblom, Cam Talbot.
What the Quant Says
86 points and a ninth consecutive season without playoff hockey, which is now the longest active drought in the Eastern Conference.
The shape is a club with a genuine top end and nothing underneath. Raymond 80 points, Larkin 70, DeBrincat 70, Kane 59, Seider 46 in 25 minutes a night, Edvinsson 31 at 22, Kasper 19 as a rookie. That is seven real players. Against it: 25th in shot-attempt share, 22nd in creating chances, 21st at preventing them, 28th on the penalty kill, and 26th in finishing.
The goaltending was 11th and has been rebuilt anyway. The blue line has two men worth building around and a 34-year-old playing 21 minutes on the top pair. What this roster most needs is the thing it has least of — forwards between the top four and the fourth line who can win a puck — and the summer answered it with a 36-year-old and a 29-year-old checker.
What the Scout Says
A club with three genuine offensive players, two real defencemen, and a middle that does not exist.
Lucas Raymond holds pucks on the half-wall, waits for a killer to commit, and puts it through the space rather than around it — 53 assists on a team that scored 238 goals. Dylan Larkin's skating is genuinely elite and he enters the zone with speed and control, which is the rarest thing a centre can do. Alex DeBrincat is 5-8 and one of the best pure finishers in the league, with a release that is quick and disguised and taken off the pass without settling it.
Moritz Seider beats a forecheck with a first pass rather than by carrying, finishes checks, and has played four consecutive full seasons at 24 minutes a night from the age of 21. Simon Edvinsson is 6-6 and skates in a way defencemen that size do not.
What surrounds them is either old or absent. Patrick Kane at 36 has no rush game and the best hands on the club. Ben Chiarot plays 21 minutes at 34 with a 15th-percentile share. Travis Hamonic is 35. James van Riemsdyk is 36. Michael Rasmussen is 6-6 and takes 59 per cent of his shots from inside 20 feet and cannot finish them.
The roster
No measured season behind two of them: John Gibson and Cam Talbot. Their pages carry an older stat line and a judgment, and nothing from 2024-25.

How they were used
2024-25 · 78 games
Measured from shift charts at five-on-five, not projected. Units are built from the strongest partnership outward and ordered by how much they were used; the percentage is the share of the first player’s five-on-five ice time spent alongside each linemate. A low number means the club never settled on a combination. Players who have gone are marked — either to another club, or off an NHL roster altogether, which covers retirement and an unsigned summer alike.
