Seventy-three games at 36, 3 goals and 21 assists, 18:48 a night and minus-7. He took 47.6 per cent of the expected goals at five-on-five over 1,214 minutes, the 34th percentile, and his ice went 53-53 against an expectation of 46.31-50.91.
That is the second-best chance share among the defencemen who actually played here, and 24 points at eighteen minutes a night at 36 is reasonable value for a man in his fourteenth season.
The Finesse Game
He walks the line and moves it, and 282 career assists in 937 games is a genuine puck-moving record. Twenty-one assists last season at 36 came almost entirely at even strength.
Eighty-four shots at a median of 54 feet with 70 per cent from beyond 40 and 3 went in — a 3.57 per cent conversion against a career 5.70. The point shot was once worth 24 career power-play goals and it has stopped being a weapon.
The Physical Game
He is 6-3 and 208 and defends by closing early rather than by finishing checks. Thirty-nine penalty minutes in 73 games is a moderate rate.
He does not win the wall against heavy forwards at 36 and he does not clear a crease. On a pair with Ben Chiarot that is a workable arrangement.
The Intangibles
A second-round pick in 2006 out of Ann Arbor, fourteen seasons across Edmonton, Montreal, Pittsburgh and now Detroit, and 937 games at 21:58 a night.
The career minus-126 is the third-worst of any defenceman in this edition and it is almost entirely a fact about employers: eight seasons in Edmonton and Montreal in the years when neither could keep the puck. He is 36 and playing at home.
