This Season So Far
The 2024-25 season has not started. The empty row above is his, and both it and this paragraph fill in on their own from the morning after he first plays: what he has done, what it is worth against his own last season, and the run he is on when the two disagree.
Last Season
Fifty games, 20 goals and 27 assists for 47 points with 2 on the power play and 7 game-winners, 18:23 a night and minus-5. Seven game-winning goals in 50 games is the third-best rate in this edition.
He converted 13.61 per cent of 147 shots against a career 11.61 across 4,058. He took 46.9 per cent of the expected goals at five-on-five over 719 minutes, the 29th percentile, and his ice went 27-39 against an expectation of 27.47-31.06. Eight extra goals against in 719 minutes at 35.
The Finesse Game
The hands are what they have always been. He handles the puck in traffic at a standstill and comes out the other side with it, and there is no defenceman in the league who has solved that in seventeen years.
Eight hundred and thirteen career assists in 1,230 games. He holds the puck on the half-wall until somebody moves and then puts it exactly where the mover is going, and 126 career power-play goals were built alongside that patience.
One hundred and forty-seven shots from a median of 30 feet and 471 career goals. The shot is a genuine one and it was never the point.
The Physical Game
He is 5-10 and 176 pounds at 35 and there has never been a physical game. Sixteen penalty minutes in 50 games.
The skating is gone and everything now happens below the circles because it has to. He does not forecheck and does not retrieve, and on a club with the 28th-ranked penalty kill he is not part of the answer.
The Intangibles
First overall in 2007 out of Buffalo, seventeen seasons, 1,230 games, three Stanley Cups, a Hart, an Art Ross and a Conn Smythe. Seventy-five career game-winning goals.
He had a hip resurfaced and did not play until December, and then had 47 points in 50 games. There is nothing left to prove and he keeps turning up, which is the only reason to keep writing about him.

The eye and the numbers
HindsightThe report ranks him 31 points above where the numbers do. It was written for a back edition, with the seasons that followed already known. Neither the agreement nor the gap says anything about the eye, and this report is excluded from the club-level comparison for the same reason. Why the numbers land there sets out the club he did it on, the minutes he played and the men he played them with.
Both bars are percentiles among the 201 skaters in this edition with a report and enough ice time. The report bar ranks the mean of the grades above — 66 on their own scale — against every other report's mean. The numbers bar ranks his share of expected goals. A gap is a disagreement about where he belongs, not two scales talking past each other.

Share of his five-on-five ice time spent alongside each player, measured from shift charts. Special teams are excluded: a power-play unit is not a line.
Why the numbers land there
Five-on-five, 2023-24
- The club
- DET took 45.9% of the expected goals as a club. His own share is 46.9% — 1.0 above the club he did it on.
- The role
- Third line, 719 minutes at five-on-five — 32nd percentile in ice time.
With and without
| Teammate | Together | Him apart | Mate apart |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alex DeBrincat | 48.1% | 44.0% | 48.7% |
| J.T. Compher | 45.9% | 47.6% | 42.6% |
| Moritz Seider | 43.3% | 48.8% | 43.5% |
48.1% together, 44.0% for him apart and 48.7% for DeBrincat apart. He was worse away from DeBrincat, who was no better away from him — he needed that pairing more than DeBrincat did.
Expected-goal share while both were on the ice, and for each man in the minutes he played without the other. Apart is the pair subtracted from his own totals. It does not settle who was carrying whom — apart from each other, both were still playing with somebody — but it does say whether the share travelled when the pairing broke up.
