11-8-2 with a .9037, a 3.11 average and 2 shutouts in 25 games for Detroit, facing 727 shots.
Two shutouts in twenty-five games at 35, in a season split with two other goaltenders, is a perfectly respectable year and it is the fourth club he has done it for.
The Physical Game
6-2 and 200. He plays deep and relies on position rather than on athleticism, which is what a goaltender of this vintage has left and is why he is still employed at 36.
The rebound control is the weakness and has been for a decade — a career .9103 with the second chance too often going back into the slot. The puck-handling is poor and he does not leave the crease.
The Mental Game
Fourteen seasons and 501 games across five organisations, most of them as somebody’s second goaltender, and the save percentage has never collapsed in any of them. A career .9103 built almost entirely in relief is a harder achievement than a career .9103 built as a starter.
He has played twenty or more games in eleven different seasons and has never been given a crease outright.
The Intangibles
Ninety-ninth overall in 2006 by Toronto, and 501 games, 215 wins, 30 shutouts and a career 2.88.
He is 36 and he was signed in the summer to a club that already had two goaltenders. He is the professional third man, and the value of that on a roster with a 24-year-old taking the job and a 31-year-old losing it is real and is not measured in games played.
