The Physical Game
He is 6-3 and 205 and covers a great deal of net standing still. The size is the method and against a clean shot from distance there is very little to shoot at.
The lateral recovery has gone. The second play across the crease is the one that beats him now, and a club that moves the puck east-west finds it every time. Behind the 27th-ranked chance suppression in hockey that is a fatal combination.
The Mental Game
Sixty-nine wins in 132 career games is a good record and almost all of it was collected in St Louis. Two seasons in Detroit have both come in below his career rate, and nineteen games last year is the club’s own verdict on the trend.
He is 29, which is young for a goaltender, and the numbers have gone one way for three years.
The Intangibles
A fourth-round pick in 2014 out of Helsinki, who posted a .9192 in St Louis at 27 and was traded on the strength of it.
Detroit has signed Cam Talbot and kept Alex Lyon. He is third and there is nothing in the last two seasons to argue with that.
