Who this names 11 of 23 on the roster · 51% of their five-on-five minutes details
Both columns above are searched, and a name counts on the same terms the page links it: in full always, by surname only when one man in the edition wears it. Nothing here says who ought to be named — only who was, so the weighting can be seen rather than guessed at.
Not named here: MacKenzie Entwistle, Mike Hardman, Reese Johnson, Tyler Johnson, Caleb Jones, Boris Katchouk, Jujhar Khaira, Philipp Kurashev, Sam Lafferty, Jake McCabe, Connor Murphy, Taylor Raddysh.
What the Quant Says
28-42-12, 68 points, 27th in the league and 7th in the Central.
219 goals for, 28th. 291 against, 26th. 29th in shot-attempt share at five-on-five at 46.0 per cent and 29th in chance share at 45.4. 2.173 expected goals for per 60 at even strength is the lowest of any club in the league.
At five-on-five: 143 goals scored against 138.9 expected, and 192 conceded against 167.1. The finishing was 15th at plus-4.1 and the goaltending 27th at minus-24.9. The defence was 14th at 2.603 expected goals against per 60 — this was not a bad defensive team. It was a team that could not generate a chance and could not stop a puck.
Patrick Kane had 92 points and a minus-19. Seth Jones played 26:13 a night — more than any defenceman in the league — for a minus-37. Jonathan Toews scored 37 points in his first season back after a year he did not play.
Alex DeBrincat has gone to Ottawa, Dylan Strome and Erik Gustafsson to Washington, Kirby Dach to Montreal, Dominik Kubalik to Detroit, Calvin de Haan to Carolina, Riley Stillman to Vancouver and Henrik Borgstrom to Washington. Marc-Andre Fleury, Kevin Lankinen and Collin Delia are all gone from the crease.
Jack Johnson, Max Domi, Jason Dickinson, Andreas Athanasiou, Colin Blackwell, Buddy Robinson, Petr Mrazek and Anton Khudobin arrive, none of them under 27, all of them on short arrangements.
This is a teardown and the club has not pretended otherwise. The two men who define it are 33 and 34 and both are in the last year of their contracts.
What the Scout Says
A club that could not generate a chance, a defence pair that blocked everything, a 33-year-old with 92 points, and a summer that removed four of the top six forwards.
Chicago generated 2.173 expected goals per 60 at even strength — the lowest rate in the league — and conceded at the 16th-best. That is a very unusual shape and it says the problem was never the blue line.
Patrick Kane took 48.9 per cent of the chances with Alex DeBrincat and 44.5 without him, and 50.1 with Dylan Strome against 43.7 without. Both are gone. Jonathan Toews finished a career plus-179 and nobody else on this roster is within two hundred of it.
The arrivals are all the same arrival: a 27-to-36-year-old on a short deal who was somebody else's fourth-liner. That is what a rebuilding club buys, and it is not a criticism of the plan.
What is worth watching is the two men at the top. Kane and Toews are both 33 or older, both in the last year of their contracts, both franchise players on a team that is going to lose sixty games, and one of them has played 1,107 NHL games for one club and the other 1,014.

How they were used
2021-22 · 82 games
Measured from shift charts at five-on-five, not projected. Units are built from the strongest partnership outward and ordered by how much they were used; the percentage is the share of the first player’s five-on-five ice time spent alongside each linemate. A low number means the club never settled on a combination. Players who have gone are marked — either to another club, or off an NHL roster altogether, which covers retirement and an unsigned summer alike.
