This Season So Far
The 2022-23 season has not started. The empty row above is his, and both it and this paragraph fill in on their own from the morning after he first plays: what he has done, what it is worth against his own last season, and the run he is on when the two disagree.
Last Season
9 goals and 17 assists in seventy games for Chicago at 18:03 a night — the 76th percentile among forwards — minus-18, forty-three penalty minutes. Third overall in 2019, three seasons, 152 games, 59 points, at 21. 6-4 and 221 pounds.
The Finesse Game
1.08 even-strength points per 60 is the 11th percentile. That is the number that matters and it is bad.
5.51 shots per 60 is the 18th percentile at 7.8 per cent, from a 20-foot median with 58 per cent from the slot. The locations are excellent and there are almost none of them — a 6-4 centre getting to the paint and not shooting when he arrives.
83.4 mph is the 8th percentile — one of the softest shots in the league, and that is the most concrete explanation for a 7.8 per cent conversion from good ice.
0.81 giveaways per 60 is the 7th percentile against 2.00 takeaways at the 75th, from a 21-year-old centre on a bad club. That combination is genuinely encouraging and it is the best thing in his file.
45.5 per cent of the expected goals is the 16th percentile. Those were Chicago’s minutes; his pair figures belong to that club.
The Physical Game
2.33 hits per 60 is the 26th percentile and 2.09 blocks the 72nd at 6-4. Forty-three penalty minutes, and a penalty net at the 17th percentile.
The frame is not showing up in any physical column, which at 21 is common and at 24 would not be.
The Intangibles
10.28 miles per 60 is the 94th percentile and 7.5 bursts over 20 mph per 60 the 72nd, at a 22.2 mph top speed in the 32nd. He covers enormous ground for his size and is not fast.
Three seasons after going third overall, 59 points in 152 games. The puck-management numbers and the ground covered are real; the shot is the 8th percentile and the even-strength scoring the 11th. He arrives in Montreal at 21 with everything still open, and the honest reading is that nothing so far has gone right except the parts nobody drafts for.
What kind of player
The searchable half of the report. The first group is computed from the season's own data; the rest are read out of the prose above, and each one carries the sentence that produced it. A subject the report never raised is simply absent.

Each computed tag also says how well its measure holds up from one season to the next, because a tag describes a season that has finished and a reader will assume it predicts the one coming. Some do and some do not, and the gap is wide: five-on-five workload repeats well, scoring late does not repeat at all.

The eye and the numbers
HindsightThe two rank him within 3 points of one another. It was written for a back edition, with the seasons that followed already known. Neither the agreement nor the gap says anything about the eye, and this report is excluded from the club-level comparison for the same reason.
Both bars are percentiles among the 649 skaters in this edition with a report and enough ice time. The report bar ranks the mean of the grades above — 53 on their own scale — against every other report's mean. The numbers bar ranks his share of expected goals. A gap is a disagreement about where he belongs, not two scales talking past each other.

A top speed is a season's best, and a man who takes more shifts gets more tries at one; the percentile is the feed's own, against every skater, and says less between a top-pair defenceman and a fourth-line wing than it does between two men in the same job. The counts are shown per game for the same reason.

With and without
| Teammate | Together | Him apart | Mate apart |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seth Jones | 43.9% | 46.6% | 48.4% |
| Jake McCabe | 41.3% | 48.1% | 44.0% |
| Alex DeBrincat | 46.6% | 45.0% | 50.4% |
43.9% together, 46.6% for him apart and 48.4% for Jones apart. Jones was better away from him while his own share held, which is a mark against him more than for him.
Expected-goal share while both were on the ice, and for each man in the minutes he played without the other. Apart is the pair subtracted from his own totals. It does not settle who was carrying whom — apart from each other, both were still playing with somebody — but it does say whether the share travelled when the pairing broke up.
