Ask the book

2023-24 edition Ask a direct question about this edition of the book — who, how many, how common, which group more — and it is answered with a table computed on this page from the edition’s index: the season line, height and age, the on-ice percentiles, the grades and the traits read out of every report. Ask for a view on named players — what a comparison comes down to, what makes a man — and you get the book’s reading of their own pages, and only those. The model turns your question into a query and phrases the result, or reads the pages it is handed; it never originates a figure, and an answer carrying a figure that is on neither the table nor the pages is withheld. It does not forecast, and it says so when a question is outside what the book holds.

Tables are computed on this page from the 2023-24 edition’s index; readings rest on the players’ own pages; the model never counts. Twenty questions an hour.

The read

the numbers, and the eye

The fewest goals in the league and the worst rate of chance creation in it — and two goaltenders who finished two ten-thousandths apart, on .8942 and .8940.

Who this names 10 of 23 on the roster · 42% of their five-on-five minutes details

Both columns above are searched, and a name counts on the same terms the page links it: in full always, by surname only when one man in the edition wears it. Nothing here says who ought to be named — only who was, so the weighting can be seen rather than guessed at.

Not named here: Joey Anderson, Colin Blackwell, Jason Dickinson, MacKenzie Entwistle, Reese Johnson, Tyler Johnson, Boris Katchouk, Philipp Kurashev, Connor Murphy, Taylor Raddysh, Lukas Reichel, Jarred Tinordi, Nikita Zaitsev.

What the Quant Says

26-49-7, 59 points, tied for 30th in the league and last in the Central.

204 goals for — the fewest in the league. 301 against, 27th. Thirty-second at creating chances at even strength, 31st in shot-attempt share, 31st in chance share, 31st on the power play, 30th in the crease — and 11th on the penalty kill.

At five-on-five: 135 goals scored against 137.3 expected, and 208 conceded against 186.9. The finishing was 20th at minus-2.3 and the goaltending 30th at minus-21.1.

Petr Mrazek finished on .8942 and Arvid Soderblom on .8940. Seth Jones finished minus-38 at 24:27 a night. Andreas Athanasiou reached 24.2 mph, the 99th percentile, and 3.7 bursts a game, the 98th, on the worst offensive club in hockey.

Taylor Hall, Corey Perry, Nick Foligno, Ryan Donato, Jaycob Megna and Rem Pitlick all arrive. Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews, Max Domi, Jake McCabe, Sam Lafferty, Caleb Jones and Ian Mitchell do not.

A club that finished last in the league at making chances has signed six forwards over 27 and lost its two franchise players in the same summer. Every one of those signings is there to make the same season survivable for a nineteen-year-old.

What the Scout Says

The worst rate of chance creation in the league, and a roster rebuilt around one arrival who is not in this book yet.

Chicago created 2.127 expected goals per 60 at even strength, the worst rate in hockey. It scored 204 goals, the fewest in the league. Both of its goaltenders finished on .894.

Everything signed this summer is a veteran on short money, and the reason is not the goals any of them will score. Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane are both gone, which ends something that lasted fifteen years.

How they were used

2022-23 · 82 games

Measured from shift charts at five-on-five, not projected. Units are built from the strongest partnership outward and ordered by how much they were used; the percentage is the share of the first player’s five-on-five ice time spent alongside each linemate. A low number means the club never settled on a combination. Players who have gone are marked — either to another club, or off an NHL roster altogether, which covers retirement and an unsigned summer alike.
