This Season So Far
The 2022-23 season has not started. The empty row above is his, and both it and this paragraph fill in on their own from the morning after he first plays: what he has done, what it is worth against his own last season, and the run he is on when the two disagree.
Last Season
56 games, 28-23-5, a .9082 save percentage and a 2.90 goals-against, four shutouts on 1,732 shots, split between Chicago and Minnesota. That save percentage is 28th of the 53 goaltenders who played twenty-five games.
He played eleven of them in Minnesota.
The Physical Game
939 career games, 520 wins, 71 shutouts — the most of all three among the 72 goaltenders in this book. Marc-Andre Fleury is first, and the man second in each of the three is Jonathan Quick, nearly two hundred games behind.
Eighteen seasons, 939 games and 26,728 shots faced, and he is still taking fifty-six starts at 37.
The Mental Game
Career .9129, and last season’s .9082 sits just under it. The season before, in Vegas, he posted .9282 across thirty-six games — the difference between those two years is a hundred and twenty starts of context and two different clubs, and the record cannot separate age from environment.
Minnesota rated 23rd in the league in goaltending at minus-13 goals saved below expectation, on a club that finished 5th in points. That is the one clear structural weakness in a 113-point season, and the club’s answer to it was to keep the 37-year-old and let both of the goaltenders who played most of the year leave.
The Intangibles
A club that finished first in the league in finishing at plus-49.1 and 23rd in goaltending has an obvious asymmetry, and it is now leaning harder on the half that was worse.
Nothing here measures positioning, glove or rebound control. What it measures is that the shots this club allowed were converted more often than the model expected, across every goaltender who faced them, which is a fact about the crease rather than about any one man in it.
He is 37, first in this book on the three counting statistics a career is remembered by, and being asked to carry more of a season than he has carried in five years.
What kind of player
The searchable half of the report. The first group is computed from the season's own data; the rest are read out of the prose above, and each one carries the sentence that produced it. A subject the report never raised is simply absent.
- a strengthread out of the prose, and claimed
Each computed tag also says how well its measure holds up from one season to the next, because a tag describes a season that has finished and a reader will assume it predicts the one coming. Some do and some do not, and the gap is wide: five-on-five workload repeats well, scoring late does not repeat at all.
