Ask the book

2025-26 edition Ask a direct question about this edition of the book — who, how many, how common, which group more — and it is answered with a table computed on this page from the edition’s index: the season line, height and age, the on-ice percentiles, the grades and the traits read out of every report. Ask for a view on named players — what a comparison comes down to, what makes a man — and you get the book’s reading of their own pages, and only those. The model turns your question into a query and phrases the result, or reads the pages it is handed; it never originates a figure, and an answer carrying a figure that is on neither the table nor the pages is withheld. It does not forecast, and it says so when a question is outside what the book holds.

Tables are computed on this page from the 2025-26 edition’s index; readings rest on the players’ own pages; the model never counts. Twenty questions an hour.

The read

the numbers, and the eye

Last in the league in shot-attempt share, last in creating chances, and 29th in goaltending — and a 19-year-old with 67 points in the middle of it.

Who this names 10 of 21 on the roster · 55% of their five-on-five minutes details

Both columns above are searched, and a name counts on the same terms the page links it: in full always, by surname only when one man in the edition wears it. Nothing here says who ought to be named — only who was, so the weighting can be seen rather than guessed at.

Not named here: Colton Dach, Nick Foligno, Wyatt Kaiser, Sam Lafferty, Ethan Del Mastro, Ilya Mikheyev, Connor Murphy, Lukas Reichel, Landon Slaggert, Arvid Soderblom, Teuvo Teravainen.

What the Quant Says

61 points, the worst record in the Western Conference, and 32nd in the league in shot-attempt share and 32nd in chance share. There is no phase of this team that is good and one that is historically bad.

The chapter is about one player and the environment around him. Connor Bedard put up 67 points at 19 with a 41.1 per cent chance share — the 3rd percentile among all skaters — and it is genuinely not possible to say how much of that number is him. Every regular forward on this roster is in the same neighbourhood: Bertuzzi 4th percentile, Donato 9th, Dickinson 2nd, Vlasic 4th.

What the club can control, it has begun to. Spencer Knight is 24 and stopped 32 points of save percentage better than the incumbent. Frank Nazar is 21 and looked like a genuine NHL centre in 53 games. Matt Grzelcyk and Andre Burakovsky were signed because a team last in the league in creating chances needs men who can make a play. None of that is close to enough yet.

What the Scout Says

A generational forward, a promising young centre, an enormous defenceman with good habits, and a roster that cannot get out of its own zone.

Connor Bedard's release is already among the best in the league — exceptionally quick, off in stride, with the angle changed late — and the passing has become the larger half of him, because on this team it has had to be. Frank Nazar's skating is genuinely elite: explosive from a standstill, changing direction at full speed without losing any of it.

Alex Vlasic is 6-6 and closes a rush at the blue line with reach rather than contact, and 12 penalty minutes across 82 games at 23 minutes a night is the strongest evidence in this chapter that the reads are good even when the results are not. Beyond those three the roster is veterans on short contracts and young men who have not shown enough: Tyler Bertuzzi standing in the blue paint being unpleasant, Nick Foligno at 37 taking 60 per cent of his shots from inside 20 feet, and Louis Crevier at 6-8 taking 88 per cent of his from beyond 40.

How they were used

2024-25 · 78 games

Measured from shift charts at five-on-five, not projected. Units are built from the strongest partnership outward and ordered by how much they were used; the percentage is the share of the first player’s five-on-five ice time spent alongside each linemate. A low number means the club never settled on a combination. Players who have gone are marked — either to another club, or off an NHL roster altogether, which covers retirement and an unsigned summer alike.
