The read
the numbers, and the eyeThe fewest goals scored in the league, the worst shot share in the league, and Connor Bedard — around whom the club spent the summer assembling seven veterans.
Who this names 16 of 24 on the roster · 73% of their five-on-five minutes details
Both columns above are searched, and a name counts on the same terms the page links it: in full always, by surname only when one man in the edition wears it. Nothing here says who ought to be named — only who was, so the weighting can be seen rather than guessed at.
Not named here: Joey Anderson, Andreas Athanasiou, Jason Dickinson, Ryan Donato, Seth Jones, Philipp Kurashev, Petr Mrazek, Arvid Soderblom.
What the Quant Says
52 points, 23-53-6, and thirty-first in the league.
The club took 43.7 per cent of the shot attempts at five-on-five, the worst share in the league, and 41.9 per cent of the expected goals, 31st. It scored 179 goals, fewer than any club in hockey, and finished 21.1 goals below what its own chances were worth. Every offensive number on this page is either last or next to last.
And it had a top-ten penalty kill. Eleventh in the league at 6.687 expected goals against per 60, on the ninth-fewest shorthanded time in hockey. On a roster this thin that is a structure doing real work.
Connor Bedard was 18 and had 61 points in 68 games. He also finished minus-44, took 41.8 per cent of the expected goals — the 6th percentile — and his ice went 38-67 against an expectation of 39.66-56.05. Seventeen goals of scoring missing on the ice of an eighteen-year-old, on the club that scored fewer than anybody. None of it is a verdict on him and all of it is the reason the club spent the summer the way it did.
The summer bought company. Teuvo Teravainen came from Carolina, Tyler Bertuzzi from Toronto, TJ Brodie from Toronto, Alec Martinez from Vegas, Ilya Mikheyev from Vancouver, Craig Smith from Dallas and Patrick Maroon from Boston. Taylor Raddysh went to Washington, Tyler Johnson to Boston, Colin Blackwell to Dallas, Reese Johnson to Minnesota and Jaycob Megna to Florida.
Seven veterans in one off-season, and the numbers they bring are the best on the roster by a distance: Craig Smith took 58.0 per cent of the chances in Dallas, the 97th percentile; Tyler Bertuzzi 56.4 in Toronto; Teuvo Teravainen 54.7 in Carolina; Ilya Mikheyev 53.8 in Vancouver. Not one player who was actually here cleared 45 per cent.
What is old is very old. Alec Martinez is 37, Nick Foligno 36, Patrick Maroon 36, Craig Smith 35 and TJ Brodie 34. What is young is the point of the whole exercise: Connor Bedard is 19, Kevin Korchinski 20, Wyatt Kaiser 22, Lukas Reichel 22, Alex Vlasic 23, Isaak Phillips 23 and Louis Crevier 23.
A club does not sign seven men over thirty because it expects to win. It does it so that a nineteen-year-old spends next season with a competent winger on his line instead of carrying the whole thing himself, and on the evidence of a minus-44 that was the correct reading.
What the Scout Says
A 6-8 defenceman, two men with more than nine hundred career penalty minutes, and the most important nineteen-year-old in hockey.
Louis Crevier is 6-8 and 228 — one of only two men at that height in this edition — and he took the lowest chance share of anybody in it. Alex Vlasic is 6-6 and 217 and defends the rush with reach. Connor Murphy is 6-4 and 212 with 437 penalty minutes in 677 games.
Patrick Maroon is 6-3 and 234 with 990 penalty minutes in 780 games and three Stanley Cups, and he was signed to be exactly that. Nick Foligno is 6-0 and 210 with 932 penalty minutes in 1,155 games and is still the man who goes to the front of the net first.
Tyler Bertuzzi is 6-2 and 200 and among the most irritating forwards in the league to play against — 248 penalty minutes in 406 games, and the whole method is standing where he is not wanted.
The rest is light. Connor Bedard is 5-10 and 190. Lukas Reichel is 170 pounds. Teuvo Teravainen is 5-11 and 191. Kevin Korchinski is 185 and plays twenty minutes a night at 20.

How they were used
2023-24 · 82 games
Measured from shift charts at five-on-five, not projected. Units are built from the strongest partnership outward and ordered by how much they were used; the percentage is the share of the first player’s five-on-five ice time spent alongside each linemate. A low number means the club never settled on a combination. Players who have gone are marked — either to another club, or off an NHL roster altogether, which covers retirement and an unsigned summer alike.
