Ask the book

2025-26 edition Ask a direct question about this edition of the book — who, how many, how common, which group more — and it is answered with a table computed on this page from the edition’s index: the season line, height and age, the on-ice percentiles, the grades and the traits read out of every report. Ask for a view on named players — what a comparison comes down to, what makes a man — and you get the book’s reading of their own pages, and only those. The model turns your question into a query and phrases the result, or reads the pages it is handed; it never originates a figure, and an answer carrying a figure that is on neither the table nor the pages is withheld. It does not forecast, and it says so when a question is outside what the book holds.

Tables are computed on this page from the 2025-26 edition’s index; readings rest on the players’ own pages; the model never counts. Twenty questions an hour.

The read

the numbers, and the eye

The first Boston team in nine years to miss the playoffs, and the first in living memory whose goaltending was below average — 27th in creating chances, and a captain traded in March.

Who this names 9 of 22 on the roster · 38% of their five-on-five minutes details

Both columns above are searched, and a name counts on the same terms the page links it: in full always, by surname only when one man in the edition wears it. Nothing here says who ought to be named — only who was, so the weighting can be seen rather than guessed at.

Not named here: Viktor Arvidsson, John Beecher, Michael Eyssimont, Morgan Geekie, Jordan Harris, Henri Jokiharju, Marat Khusnutdinov, Joonas Korpisalo, Sean Kuraly, Elias Lindholm, Casey Mittelstadt, Andrew Peeke, Pavel Zacha.

What the Quant Says

76 points, and the first Boston season since 2016 without playoff hockey. The club traded its captain in March.

The numbers underneath say it was not an accident. 27th in creating chances, 27th in shot-attempt share, 18th at suppressing them, finishing 18th, goaltending 20th. There is no phase where this team was good and no bounce that went against it — the record is what the roster was.

Two things could change that quickly and neither is under the club's control. Jeremy Swayman was a .916 goaltender for four years and an .892 one for this season, and if the first four were the truth the club is 10 goals better immediately. Charlie McAvoy played 50 games, and everything the rebuild hopes for assumes 24 minutes a night from a defenceman who has averaged 62 games a season for his career. Around them: Pastrnak at 106 points, Mason Lohrei at 24, Matthew Poitras at 21, Fraser Minten at 21, and a bottom six rebuilt out of size.

What the Scout Says

One of the best players in the world, one of the better two-way defencemen when he is upright, and a roster that has been stripped to the studs around them.

David Pastrnak has the best release in the league and has had for five years — off either foot, off the pass, without a windup, with the angle changed late. Charlie McAvoy beats a forecheck by carrying rather than passing, closes gaps at the blue line as well as anybody, and plays a hard physical game that is unusual for a defenceman with this much skill.

The rest is a study in size without skill. Nikita Zadorov is 6-7 and 255 and forwards visibly change their route through the slot when he is out; he took 145 penalty minutes doing it. Mark Kastelic is 6-4 and 234 and took 106 in 61 games. Tanner Jeannot arrives at 221 pounds and 89 minutes. Boston will be unpleasant to play against this season, which is a different thing from being good, and the two young men who matter — Mason Lohrei and Matthew Poitras — are both being asked to learn in an environment that punishes learning.

How they were used

2024-25 · 78 games

Measured from shift charts at five-on-five, not projected. Units are built from the strongest partnership outward and ordered by how much they were used; the percentage is the share of the first player’s five-on-five ice time spent alongside each linemate. A low number means the club never settled on a combination. Players who have gone are marked — either to another club, or off an NHL roster altogether, which covers retirement and an unsigned summer alike.
