A lower goals-against average than the starter and a save percentage within a point of him, in half the games. On a club this poor that is neither an endorsement nor a criticism; it is two goaltenders having the same season.
The Physical Game
6-4 and 200, and he plays a large, positional game — deep, square, and reliant on size rather than quickness.
The lateral movement is the weakness and it always has been. A puck moved across the slot beats him more often than it should, and the rebound control is the worst of the two goaltenders here. Behind a club that concedes as many second chances as this one that is the wrong pair of flaws.
The Mental Game
Eleven seasons, five organisations, and a career of alternating between a good half-season and a bad one. He has been a starter, lost the job, been traded, been bought out of the situation, and kept working.
There is no evidence of a goaltender who unravels, and none of one who strings together three good months.
The Intangibles
At 31, doing the job he is suited to: 25 starts, no expectations, and a modest cost.
The useful thing about him on this roster is that he can play 30 games without the club being obviously worse, which is what a rebuilding team needs from a backup while it finds out what its starter is.
