Last Season
33 goals and 24 assists in 77 games for 57 points, plus-3, on 16:55 a night — the second-highest goal total on the club and a career high by 16.
22 per cent shooting on 150 shots. His previous best was 12.7. His on-ice goals were 35-37 against an expected 44-42, so the line did not outscore anybody; he simply converted at a rate no forward sustains.
The Finesse Game
A quick release from a big frame, and a genuinely improved sense of where to be — 34 per cent of his attempts came from inside 20 feet, which is a real change from earlier in his career and is the part of the season worth believing.
What is not believable is the rate. 150 shots is a third-line volume, and 33 goals from it requires a conversion rate that only a handful of players in history have held for two seasons running. He played most of the year beside the best shooter in the league, which helps, and does not make 22 per cent a skill.
The Physical Game
6-3 and 212, and he plays a straight, honest, forechecking game. He gets to the net front and can hold a position there, and he takes the punishment that comes with converting from 27 feet.
22 penalty minutes over 77 games. The durability has been fine.
The Intangibles
A third-round pick, four organisations, and a career of being a useful bottom-six forward until a contract year on the first line of a bad team.
The club has now paid him as a scorer. The honest projection is 20 goals, and the gap between that and 33 is the single largest bet in this chapter.
