Jeremy Swayman
Boston Bruins Goaltender
An .8922 across 58 games after a contract dispute cost him a training camp, and the worst season of his career by a distance.

This Season So Far
The 2025-26 season has not started. The empty row above is his, and both it and this paragraph fill in on their own from the morning after he first plays: what he has done, what it is worth against his own last season, and the run he is on when the two disagree.
Last Season
22-29-7 in 58 games, .8922 with a 3.11 average and 4 shutouts on 1,632 shots.
He had stopped .916 or better in each of his first four seasons. This one came in 5.3 goals worse than the chances faced, 20th in the league, on a club that was 18th at suppressing them — so neither the goaltender nor the defence was good, and the goaltender had been the reason the previous three seasons worked.
The Physical Game
6-3 and 195, and the game is athletic and reactive rather than positional. He is quick, he tracks well through traffic, and he makes saves in sequence better than almost anyone at his best.
What went wrong last season looks technical rather than physical: he was deeper in the net than he had been, square less often, and the rebound control was worse. That is the profile of a goaltender who has not had a normal preparation.
The Mental Game
He missed the entire training camp in a contract dispute that became public and unpleasant, then signed a large deal and played the worst season of his life on a club that traded its captain at the deadline.
How much of the .8922 is that is unanswerable and it is the only question about him that matters. There is no record before last season of him being fragile, and a considerable record of the opposite.
The Intangibles
At 26, on one of the largest goaltending contracts in the league, coming off a season that would have got a lesser-paid goaltender waived.
The club has no alternative and does not need one if the previous four seasons were the truth. The reason to believe they were: he faced 1,632 shots behind a defence corps whose best chance share was the 58th percentile, from a man who played 50 games. The reason to worry: 58 games is not a small sample.
