Last Season
3 goals and 7 assists in 60 games for 10 points, plus-13, on 17:49 a night between Buffalo and Boston.
48.4 per cent at five-on-five, the 35th percentile. His on-ice goals were 45-51 against an expected 35-37, which means considerably more went in at both ends than the chances warranted — a small-sample artefact rather than a finding.
The Finesse Game
The skating and the first pass are the reasons he has an NHL career. He escapes a forecheck cleanly, moves the puck early, and does not stall a breakout.
The offence has never arrived. 59 shots in 60 games with 74 per cent of them from beyond 40 feet, and 10 points; he was a first-round pick partly for a puck game that has stayed at the level of competent rather than dangerous.
The Physical Game
6 feet and 205, and light for the position. He does not clear a net front, does not win battles by force, and defends with his stick and his positioning.
14 penalty minutes over 60 games. He is rarely beaten badly enough to reach, which is a compliment to the reads.
The Intangibles
A first-round pick, seven seasons of being a useful third-pair defenceman, and a deadline trade at 26 that was mostly about salary.
The projection is unchanged and honest: a right-shot defenceman who can play 18 minutes on a third pair and will not hurt a team. On this blue line that makes him the second-best puck-mover, which says more about the blue line.
