The Finesse Game
There is essentially none. The first pass is short and safe and it goes to the boards more often than to a forward, and 17 points in 76 games is a defensive defenceman’s total in a defensive defenceman’s role.
What he does provide is a defenceman who does not lose the puck in his own zone, which on a pairing with Lohrei is precisely the job description.
The Physical Game
6-3 and 214, and he defends the front of his net properly. He boxes out, ties up sticks, and blocks shots without theatre.
15 penalty minutes across 76 games is exceptional discipline for a defenceman in this role, and it is the most impressive thing in his statistical record.
The Intangibles
A second-round pick, seven NHL seasons across two clubs, and a career of being the third-pair right shot who ends up playing on the second because of injuries.
That is what happened here. He is a serviceable defenceman being asked to do more than he should, on a club without the depth to arrange otherwise, and the projection does not change: 18 minutes, no offence, and no disasters.
