the numbers, and the eyeA hundred and nine points, twentieth in the league at creating chances, and 27.2 goals of goaltending — and half the crease was traded in June.
Who this names 19 of 23 on the roster · 83% of their five-on-five minutes details
Both columns above are searched, and a name counts on the same terms the page links it: in full always, by surname only when one man in the edition wears it. Nothing here says who ought to be named — only who was, so the weighting can be seen rather than guessed at.
Not named here: Vinni Lettieri, Charlie McAvoy, Andrew Peeke, Parker Wotherspoon.
What the Quant Says
109 points, 47-20-15, and sixth in the league. A seven-game win over Toronto and a six-game loss to Florida.
The club was 24th in the league in shot attempts at five-on-five and 20th in expected goals, and its even-strength chance-creation rate was 22nd. That is a middling hockey team by process and a very good one by result, and the gap has a name.
It scored 174 goals at five-on-five against an expectation of 160.5 and conceded 135 against 162.2 — 13.5 goals of finishing, 5th in the league, and 27.2 goals of goaltending, 2nd. Nearly forty-one goals of margin sitting in the two places that persist least well from one season to the next.
This was also the first season without Patrice Bergeron and David Krejčí, and 109 points in it is a real achievement of coaching and structure. It is not evidence that the roster underneath is a 109-point roster.
The summer subtracted more than it added, and it subtracted from the one thing that was carrying the club. Linus Ullmark was traded to Ottawa. Jake DeBrusk, Danton Heinen and Derek Forbort all went to Vancouver, James van Riemsdyk to Columbus, Matt Grzelcyk to Pittsburgh and Jakub Lauko to Minnesota.
In came Elias Lindholm from Vancouver, Nikita Zadorov from Vancouver, Joonas Korpisalo and Mark Kastelic from Ottawa, Max Jones from Anaheim and Tyler Johnson from Chicago. Lindholm is a genuine first-line centre and the club has needed one for two years. Zadorov is 6-7 and 255 and took 125 penalty minutes. The rest is fourth-line weight.
What is old is very old. Brad Marchand is 36, Tyler Johnson 34, Charlie Coyle 32 and Jordan Oesterle 32. What is young is thin: Mason Lohrei is 23, Matthew Poitras 20 and John Beecher 23, and there is not much behind them.
A club that finishes sixth on twenty-seven goals of goaltending and then trades a goaltender is making a bet. Jeremy Swayman is 25 and has a career .9186, and every point of this season depends on him.
What the Scout Says
A 6-7 defenceman, a captain who has been the most hated man in the league for fifteen years, and a forward group that is unusually large.
Nikita Zadorov is 6-7 and 255 with 701 penalty minutes in 642 games, and he was added precisely because the club had nobody like him. He clears the front of his own net by force and he finishes every check.
Brad Marchand is 5-9 and 180 and is the hardest man in this book to play against for his size — 1,051 penalty minutes in 1,029 games, an agitator who has spent fifteen years crossing the line and knowing exactly where it is.
The forwards are big. Charlie Coyle is 6-3 and 221, Trent Frederic 6-3 and 221, Pavel Zacha 6-4 and 211, Morgan Geekie 6-3 and 212, Mark Kastelic 6-4 and 234, John Beecher 6-3 and 220 and Max Jones 6-3 and 216. Seven forwards at 6-3 or better.
The blue line has size without much nastiness beyond Zadorov. Brandon Carlo is 6-5 and 227, Mason Lohrei 6-5 and 218, Hampus Lindholm 6-4 and 217. David Pastrnak is 6-0 and 199 and does not play a physical game at all.

How they were used
2023-24 · 82 games
Measured from shift charts at five-on-five, not projected. Units are built from the strongest partnership outward and ordered by how much they were used; the percentage is the share of the first player’s five-on-five ice time spent alongside each linemate. A low number means the club never settled on a combination. Players who have gone are marked — either to another club, or off an NHL roster altogether, which covers retirement and an unsigned summer alike.
