9.5 per cent shooting, against a career rate above 12. On a club with two of the best players in the world he was a third-line winger for most of the season, which is both an explanation and a verdict.
The Finesse Game
A volume shooter who has always taken more shots than his size suggests. 158 in 67 games is a high rate, and the release is quick and heavy off the wall.
The playmaking is limited — 12 assists — and he does not create for others. The pace has gone from where it was at 26, and a winger whose game was built on arriving first is now arriving second more often than he did.
The Physical Game
5-10 and 181, and he plays as though he is much larger. He goes to the net front, takes cross-checks and stays, and forechecks with genuine force for a man of his size.
24 penalty minutes. The body has paid for the style — he has missed significant time in four of the last six seasons, and there is no reason to expect that to reverse at 32.
The Intangibles
A fourth-round pick who became a 34-goal scorer through effort as much as skill, and has never played a shift at anything less than full speed.
Boston is buying a second-line winger for a club that needs three of them. At 32 with this style and this injury record, a good outcome is 60 games and 20 goals.
