Ask the book

2022-23 edition Ask a direct question about this edition of the book — who, how many, how common, which group more — and it is answered with a table computed on this page from the edition’s index: the season line, height and age, the on-ice percentiles, the grades and the traits read out of every report. Ask for a view on named players — what a comparison comes down to, what makes a man — and you get the book’s reading of their own pages, and only those. The model turns your question into a query and phrases the result, or reads the pages it is handed; it never originates a figure, and an answer carrying a figure that is on neither the table nor the pages is withheld. It does not forecast, and it says so when a question is outside what the book holds.

Tables are computed on this page from the 2022-23 edition’s index; readings rest on the players’ own pages; the model never counts. Twenty questions an hour.

The read

the numbers, and the eye

The best chance-suppressing club in the league and the second-best possession team in it, whose two goaltenders posted a .9167 and a .9136 and still cost it 11.4 goals — and whose two best players will both start the season injured.

Who this names 6 of 23 on the roster · 32% of their five-on-five minutes details

Both columns above are searched, and a name counts on the same terms the page links it: in full always, by surname only when one man in the edition wears it. Nothing here says who ought to be named — only who was, so the weighting can be seen rather than guessed at.

Not named here: Brandon Carlo, Connor Clifton, Charlie Coyle, Jake DeBrusk, Nick Foligno, Derek Forbort, Trent Frederic, Matt Grzelcyk, Taylor Hall, Vinni Lettieri, Hampus Lindholm, Tomas Nosek, Mike Reilly, Craig Smith, Oskar Steen, Jeremy Swayman, Linus Ullmark.

What the Quant Says

51-26-5, 107 points, 10th in the league and third in the Atlantic.

255 goals for, 15th. 220 against, 4th. 2nd in chance share at five-on-five at 56.2 per cent, 4th in shot-attempt share at 54.5, and 1st in the league at suppressing expected goals at even strength — 2.126 per 60, the lowest rate in hockey.

At five-on-five: 172 goals scored against 169.9 expected, and 144 conceded against 132.6. The finishing was 18th at plus-2.1 and the goaltending 22nd at minus-11.4. A club this good in front of the net was ordinary at putting the puck in it and below average at keeping it out.

Patrice Bergeron took 69.0 per cent of the expected goals at five-on-five — the highest figure of any skater in this book — at thirty-six. Brad Marchand took 64.0 per cent and scored 80 points in 70 games at thirty-four. Charlie McAvoy took 61.2 per cent across 1,418 minutes and finished plus-31.

Marchand had surgery on both hips in the summer and McAvoy on a shoulder. Neither will play before roughly December, and they are the two best players on the roster.

Bruce Cassidy was dismissed in June and Jim Montgomery hired. Erik Haula has gone to New Jersey for Pavel Zacha, Curtis Lazar to Vancouver, and Tuukka Rask has retired. David Krejci returns after a season in the Czech league, and Anton Stralman arrives at thirty-six.

Patrice Bergeron is signed for one year, David Pastrnak for one, and Brad Marchand and Charlie McAvoy will miss two months of it. Everything about this season is a question of how much time is left.

What the Scout Says

A thirty-six-year-old centre who took 69 per cent of the chances, a thirty-four-year-old winger with new hips, a twenty-six-year-old with the hardest shot in the league in a contract year, and a defenceman out until Christmas.

Patrice Bergeron has 1,216 games, five Selke trophies and a one-year contract. Brad Marchand has 795 points in 874 games and had both hips operated on in June. Charlie McAvoy is 24, signed for eight years, and had shoulder surgery.

Everything about this roster is good and almost none of it is young. The window is not closing gradually; it is being held open by two men in their mid-thirties who have both spent a summer in a surgeon's care, and the club spent that summer changing its coach.

How they were used

2021-22 · 82 games

Measured from shift charts at five-on-five, not projected. Units are built from the strongest partnership outward and ordered by how much they were used; the percentage is the share of the first player’s five-on-five ice time spent alongside each linemate. A low number means the club never settled on a combination. Players who have gone are marked — either to another club, or off an NHL roster altogether, which covers retirement and an unsigned summer alike.
