Ask the book

2022-23 edition Ask a direct question about this edition of the book — who, how many, how common, which group more — and it is answered with a table computed on this page from the edition’s index: the season line, height and age, the on-ice percentiles, the grades and the traits read out of every report. Ask for a view on named players — what a comparison comes down to, what makes a man — and you get the book’s reading of their own pages, and only those. The model turns your question into a query and phrases the result, or reads the pages it is handed; it never originates a figure, and an answer carrying a figure that is on neither the table nor the pages is withheld. It does not forecast, and it says so when a question is outside what the book holds.

Tables are computed on this page from the 2022-23 edition’s index; readings rest on the players’ own pages; the model never counts. Twenty questions an hour.

the numbers, and the eye

One hundred and ten points off the 25th-best chance share in the league, and twenty-three goals of Igor Shesterkin.

Who this names 9 of 21 on the roster · 56% of their five-on-five minutes details

Both columns above are searched, and a name counts on the same terms the page links it: in full always, by surname only when one man in the edition wears it. Nothing here says who ought to be named — only who was, so the weighting can be seen rather than guessed at.

Not named here: Jonny Brodzinski, Ryan Carpenter, Filip Chytil, Julien Gauthier, Jaroslav Halak, Dryden Hunt, Kaapo Kakko, Alexis Lafrenière, K'Andre Miller, Igor Shesterkin, Vincent Trocheck, Jimmy Vesey.

What the Quant Says

52-24-6, 110 points, 7th in the league. 254 goals for, 16th; 207 against, 2nd.

And 24th in attempt share, 25th in chance share, 28th in expected goals per 60 at even strength. This is a bottom-quarter possession club that won fifty-two games.

It finished 2nd in the league in goaltending at plus-23.4 goals saved above expectation. At five-on-five it conceded 148 goals against an expectation of 171.4.

Twenty-three goals. That is the distance between 207 goals against and the 19th-ranked defensive rate that produced it, and it is the distance between 110 points and something a great deal more ordinary.

Finishing rated 10th at plus-7.9. The power play finished 7th on the smallest workload in the league. Everything that worked here worked at special teams or in the crease.

What the Scout Says

This is the clearest one-man club in the batch and the chapter should say so before anything else. Twenty-four points of attempt share, 25th in chances, 28th in expected goals per 60 — and 110 points.

Igor Shesterkin's twenty-three goals above expectation is the whole gap, and it appears in every individual ledger on the roster: Trouba twelve fewer against than the model, Miller thirteen, Panarin fourteen, Goodrow thirteen, Lindgren nine, Schneider eight.

The pair file is quiet by comparison. Chris Kreider and Mika Zibanejad played 1,726 attempts together at 53.1 per cent and were almost never separated — neither has an apart sample worth 250 attempts. Adam Fox and Ryan Lindgren played 1,961 attempts together at 50.2 per cent, and the small apart samples run one way: Fox 53.7 without him, Lindgren 39.6 without Fox.

The bottom of the roster is where the possession went. Ryan Reaves took the lowest chance share of the 393 qualified forwards and Kevin Rooney the lowest attempt share; Barclay Goodrow's 43.2 per cent chance share is the 32nd-worst in the league at nearly seventeen minutes a night. Rooney and Patrik Nemeth have gone; Reaves and Goodrow have not.

How they were used

2021-22 · 82 games

Measured from shift charts at five-on-five, not projected. Units are built from the strongest partnership outward and ordered by how much they were used; the percentage is the share of the first player’s five-on-five ice time spent alongside each linemate. A low number means the club never settled on a combination. Players who have gone are marked — either to another club, or off an NHL roster altogether, which covers retirement and an unsigned summer alike.
