The read
the numbers, and the eyeOutscored opponents 256-255, beat the chances by nineteen goals at five-on-five, and missed the playoffs a year after the Presidents' Trophy — 28th in the league at suppressing them.
Who this names 6 of 24 on the roster · 39% of their five-on-five minutes details
Both columns above are searched, and a name counts on the same terms the page links it: in full always, by surname only when one man in the edition wears it. Nothing here says who ought to be named — only who was, so the weighting can be seen rather than guessed at.
Not named here: Brett Berard, Will Borgen, Jonny Brodzinski, Sam Carrick, Justin Dowling, Adam Edstrom, Alexis Lafrenière, Spencer Martin, Brennan Othmann, Juuso Parssinen, Jonathan Quick, Taylor Raddysh, Matt Rempe, Braden Schneider, Igor Shesterkin, Carson Soucy, Urho Vaakanainen, Mika Zibanejad.
What the Quant Says
85 points and no playoff place, a year after 114 and the Presidents' Trophy.
The club outscored its opponents 256-255 and was 163-159 at five-on-five against an expectation of 154.1-168.8. They beat the chances by nineteen goals over a full season — 10th in finishing, 10th in goaltending — and it was still not enough, because the chances themselves were 28th in the league.
That is the whole chapter, and it is the exact inverse of Nashville's. One club had a good process and no execution; this one had good execution and no process, and both finished outside the playoffs. Of the two, this is the more expensive failure, because finishing and goaltending are the halves that do not repeat and the chance share is the half that does.
The organisation drew its own conclusions and did so at length. Jacob Trouba was traded in December and Kaapo Kakko with him, J.T. Miller was acquired in January for Filip Chytil and a first-round pick, Ryan Lindgren went at the deadline, Chris Kreider was traded to Anaheim in June, K'Andre Miller to Carolina and Reilly Smith to Vegas, and Vladislav Gavrikov was signed out of Los Angeles on a long contract. Peter Laviolette was dismissed and Mike Sullivan hired out of Pittsburgh.
A captain, a first-line winger, a first-pair defenceman and a coach, in nine months.
What the Scout Says
A club whose best defenceman weighs 185 pounds and whose best forward weighs 176, which spent the summer buying weight and has almost none of it above the third line.
Adam Fox reads a breakout before it forms and moves the puck to somebody who can use it, and 32 penalty minutes in 74 games says a man who arrives first does not need to foul. Artemi Panarin slows a play down at full speed and finds a man through a lane that was not there when he started, and 16 penalty minutes says he does not engage in a way that costs anybody anything. Between them they are the two most gifted players in this chapter and neither of them wins a puck.
Vincent Trocheck is 5-11 and 187 and plays a great deal heavier — he goes to the front of the net against men who outweigh him by forty pounds and 44 penalty minutes says the edge is real. J.T. Miller is difficult and means to be, and the second penalty of a sequence is regularly his. Will Cuylle is 6-3 and 212 and arrives to hit rather than to angle.
Vladislav Gavrikov is the correction. A heavy defenceman who takes 28 penalty minutes in 82 games at twenty-three minutes a night is rare, and it is the specific thing this roster has been missing behind Fox for years.

How they were used
2024-25 · 78 games
Measured from shift charts at five-on-five, not projected. Units are built from the strongest partnership outward and ordered by how much they were used; the percentage is the share of the first player’s five-on-five ice time spent alongside each linemate. A low number means the club never settled on a combination. Players who have gone are marked — either to another club, or off an NHL roster altogether, which covers retirement and an unsigned summer alike.
