Ask the book

2022-23 edition Ask a direct question about this edition of the book — who, how many, how common, which group more — and it is answered with a table computed on this page from the edition’s index: the season line, height and age, the on-ice percentiles, the grades and the traits read out of every report. Ask for a view on named players — what a comparison comes down to, what makes a man — and you get the book’s reading of their own pages, and only those. The model turns your question into a query and phrases the result, or reads the pages it is handed; it never originates a figure, and an answer carrying a figure that is on neither the table nor the pages is withheld. It does not forecast, and it says so when a question is outside what the book holds.

Tables are computed on this page from the 2022-23 edition’s index; readings rest on the players’ own pages; the model never counts. Twenty questions an hour.

This Season So Far

The 2022-23 season has not started. The empty row above is his, and both it and this paragraph fill in on their own from the morning after he first plays: what he has done, what it is worth against his own last season, and the run he is on when the two disagree.

Last Season

81 games, 52 goals and 25 assists for 77 points at 18:44 a night, plus-19, twenty-four penalty minutes, 258 shots. Nineteenth overall in 2009, ten seasons, 654 games, 423 points.

Fifty-two goals is 3rd in the league and twenty-four more than he had ever scored. Twenty-six of them came on the power play — the most in the league, two clear of Leon Draisaitl and ten clear of everyone else.

The Finesse Game

Sixty-five per cent of his shots came from the slot at a 16-foot median — the 92nd percentile and the 9th-shortest of 393 forwards — and twenty-six of his fifty-two goals came on the power play from that square.

20.2 per cent shooting is the 97th percentile, against a career rate of 14.9 across 1,533 shots. 10.20 shots per 60 is the 90th and 258 shots is the most he has ever taken.

Forty-five per cent of his points came on the power play, the 98th percentile, from 2:58 a night — on a club that took the fewest power-play minutes in the league.

2.02 even-strength points per 60 is the 65th percentile, which is the honest measure of the rest of his game.

1.07 takeaways per 60 is the 13th percentile. He does not win pucks.

52.1 per cent of the expected goals on 49.0 per cent offensive-zone starts — dead level. His ice went 49-41 against an expectation of 45.45-41.85.

He and Mika Zibanejad played 1,726 attempts together and took 53.1 per cent of them. Neither was on the ice without the other for as much as 240 attempts all season.

The Physical Game

5.58 hits per 60 is the 67th percentile and 1.54 blocks the 43rd at 6-3 and 232 pounds.

0.28 penalties drawn per 60 is the 4th percentile. For a man who stands in the crease for a living that is the least expected number in the file, and twenty-four penalty minutes in eighty-one games is the other half of it.

The Intangibles

11.2 bursts over 20 mph per 60 is the 92nd percentile and 23.2 mph the 89th, at 6-3 and 232 pounds. 9.01 miles per 60 is the 8th percentile — he sprints constantly and covers almost no ground, which is what a straight-line power forward looks like on a chip.

He is 31 with 229 career goals and had never scored thirty. Twenty-six power-play goals is the number to distrust and the slot share is the reason it happened at all. The shooting percentage is five points above ten years of evidence; the place he takes his shots from is not.

What kind of player

The searchable half of the report. The first group is computed from the season's own data; the rest are read out of the prose above, and each one carries the sentence that produced it. A subject the report never raised is simply absent.

  • a strengthread out of the prose, and claimed

Each computed tag also says how well its measure holds up from one season to the next, because a tag describes a season that has finished and a reader will assume it predicts the one coming. Some do and some do not, and the gap is wide: five-on-five workload repeats well, scoring late does not repeat at all.

  • net-fronta strength· lives in the blue paint; the screens and the tips

The eye and the numbers

The two rank him within 10 points of one another. It was written for a back edition, with the seasons that followed already known. Neither the agreement nor the gap says anything about the eye, and this report is excluded from the club-level comparison for the same reason.

Both bars are percentiles among the 649 skaters in this edition with a report and enough ice time. The report bar ranks the mean of the grades above — 68 on their own scale — against every other report's mean. The numbers bar ranks his share of expected goals. A gap is a disagreement about where he belongs, not two scales talking past each other.

A top speed is a season's best, and a man who takes more shifts gets more tries at one; the percentile is the feed's own, against every skater, and says less between a top-pair defenceman and a fourth-line wing than it does between two men in the same job. The counts are shown per game for the same reason.

53.1% together, 39.3% for him apart and 23.4% for Zibanejad apart. Both were worse apart, so whatever the two of them had together was doing real work.

Expected-goal share while both were on the ice, and for each man in the minutes he played without the other. Apart is the pair subtracted from his own totals. It does not settle who was carrying whom — apart from each other, both were still playing with somebody — but it does say whether the share travelled when the pairing broke up.
