Ask the book

2022-23 edition Ask a direct question about this edition of the book — who, how many, how common, which group more — and it is answered with a table computed on this page from the edition’s index: the season line, height and age, the on-ice percentiles, the grades and the traits read out of every report. Ask for a view on named players — what a comparison comes down to, what makes a man — and you get the book’s reading of their own pages, and only those. The model turns your question into a query and phrases the result, or reads the pages it is handed; it never originates a figure, and an answer carrying a figure that is on neither the table nor the pages is withheld. It does not forecast, and it says so when a question is outside what the book holds.

Tables are computed on this page from the 2022-23 edition’s index; readings rest on the players’ own pages; the model never counts. Twenty questions an hour.

The read

the numbers, and the eye

The 2nd-best finishing in hockey off the 26th-best possession — 311 goals and thirty-five more at five-on-five than the model asked for.

Who this names 4 of 23 on the roster · 25% of their five-on-five minutes details

Both columns above are searched, and a name counts on the same terms the page links it: in full always, by surname only when one man in the edition wears it. Nothing here says who ought to be named — only who was, so the weighting can be seen rather than guessed at.

Not named here: Noel Acciari, Ivan Barbashev, Jordan Binnington, Robert Bortuzzo, Logan Brown, Thomas Greiss, Matthew Highmore, Jordan Kyrou, Nick Leddy, Niko Mikkola, Ryan O'Reilly, Colton Parayko, Tyler Pitlick, Brandon Saad, Marco Scandella, Brayden Schenn, Vladimir Tarasenko, Alexey Toropchenko, Nathan Walker.

What the Quant Says

49-22-11, 109 points, 9th in the league. 311 goals for, 4th; 242 against, 11th.

And 26th in attempt share at 46.9 per cent, 20th in chance share at 48.2. Twenty-two clubs held the puck more than the team that finished fourth in scoring.

Finishing rated plus-34.8 — 2nd in the league behind Minnesota — and goaltending plus-4.6, 10th. The five-on-five ledger: goals for 199 against an expectation of 164.2, goals against 172 against an expectation of 176.6.

Thirty-five more goals in front than the model asked and four and a half fewer against. The forward group converted at a rate almost nobody in the league matched, and it did so from a shot share in the bottom quarter.

A hundred and nine points is what that buys. The question every number in this chapter asks is what happens when the conversion comes back.

What the Scout Says

St Louis finished 4th in the league in goals and 26th in attempt share. That is a twenty-two-place gap and the finishing column names its cause exactly: plus-34.8, second only to Minnesota.

At five-on-five the club scored 199 goals against an expectation of 164.2. Thirty-five more than the model asked, and the goals against came in four and a half under. Both halves went the right way and the larger one went the right way by a great deal.

The individual files show where it came from. Ivan Barbashev's 23.4 per cent shooting is the 2nd-highest of all 393 forwards who played forty games; Brayden Schenn's 21.6 is the 7th. Justin Faulk scored sixteen goals from a 46-foot median at 9.6 per cent, the 97th percentile among defencemen. Robert Thomas converted 17.4 per cent on 115 shots and Robert Bortuzzo's ice ran twenty goals ahead of expectation.

Four men, three of them shooting from distance or from small volumes, all of them at rates their own careers do not support. Barbashev's career figure across 354 attempts is 19.2 per cent and Schenn's across 1,608 is 13.6.

Underneath it the possession numbers are genuinely poor and they are not a deployment artefact. Only Torey Krug and Justin Faulk were given soft chairs and neither cleared fifty per cent of the expected goals out of them.

The one forward whose ice made the club better was Pavel Buchnevich, and the with-and-without file says so in nine separate rows.

How they were used

2021-22 · 82 games

Measured from shift charts at five-on-five, not projected. Units are built from the strongest partnership outward and ordered by how much they were used; the percentage is the share of the first player’s five-on-five ice time spent alongside each linemate. A low number means the club never settled on a combination. Players who have gone are marked — either to another club, or off an NHL roster altogether, which covers retirement and an unsigned summer alike.
