Ask the book

2022-23 edition Ask a direct question about this edition of the book — who, how many, how common, which group more — and it is answered with a table computed on this page from the edition’s index: the season line, height and age, the on-ice percentiles, the grades and the traits read out of every report. Ask for a view on named players — what a comparison comes down to, what makes a man — and you get the book’s reading of their own pages, and only those. The model turns your question into a query and phrases the result, or reads the pages it is handed; it never originates a figure, and an answer carrying a figure that is on neither the table nor the pages is withheld. It does not forecast, and it says so when a question is outside what the book holds.

Tables are computed on this page from the 2022-23 edition’s index; readings rest on the players’ own pages; the model never counts. Twenty questions an hour.

This Season So Far

The 2022-23 season has not started. The empty row above is his, and both it and this paragraph fill in on their own from the morning after he first plays: what he has done, what it is worth against his own last season, and the run he is on when the two disagree.

Last Season

37 games, 18-14-4, a .9013 save percentage and a 3.13 goals-against, two shutouts on 1,135 shots. That is 38th of the 53 goaltenders who played twenty-five games. Eighty-eighth overall in 2011 by St Louis — the third round — five seasons, 162 games.

The Physical Game

6-2 and 172 pounds, and 29 years old.

The career reads .9269 across 807 shots, .9119 across 1,430, .9100 across 1,200 and .9013 across 1,135. Career .9113 across 4,576.

Four seasons of real size and each one lower than the last. Two hundred and fifty-six points of decline in a straight line, and the last of them is below the league median.

The 2018-19 figure is the outlier and it came off 807 shots, which is the smallest of the four. Nothing since has come close to it and the three that followed sit inside 106 points of each other.

The Mental Game

St Louis rated 10th in the league in goaltending at plus-4.6 goals saved above expectation, and that rating is not his.

Ville Husso played forty games at .9191 — 7th of the same 53 — and has gone to Detroit. Binnington played thirty-seven at .9013 and Charlie Lindgren five. The positive rating belongs to the goaltender who left.

The skaters in front finished 26th in the league in attempt share at 46.9 per cent and 20th in chances at 48.2, which is a poor structure and not enough of one to account for a .9013.

The club’s five-on-five ledger was 199 goals for against an expectation of 164.2, and 172 against against an expectation of 176.6. The scoring covered the crease all year.

The Intangibles

Nothing here measures rebound control, how he tracks a puck through traffic, or what he does on a second chance.

What it measures is 4,576 career shots at .9113 from a 29-year-old, with the trend running downward across every one of his four full seasons.

He is now the established starter by default. A club that scored 311 goals and finished 4th in the league in goals had the 38th-ranked save percentage of fifty-three men, and it has traded away the only part of the crease that was working.
