Who this names 15 of 23 on the roster · 74% of their five-on-five minutes details
Both columns above are searched, and a name counts on the same terms the page links it: in full always, by surname only when one man in the edition wears it. Nothing here says who ought to be named — only who was, so the weighting can be seen rather than guessed at.
Not named here: Sergei Bobrovsky, Lucas Carlsson, Anthony Duclair, Gustav Forsling, Patric Hornqvist, Spencer Knight, Ryan Lomberg, Eetu Luostarinen.
What the Quant Says
58-18-6, 122 points, 1st in the league. Florida beat Washington in six and was swept by Tampa Bay in the second round.
340 goals for, 1st. 246 against, 13th. 1st in shot-attempt share at five-on-five at 56.3 per cent and 1st in chance share at 56.5. 1st at creating chances at even strength and 14th at suppressing them.
At five-on-five: 218 goals scored against 212.0 expected, and 161 conceded against 163.2. The finishing was 12th at plus-6.0 and the goaltending 13th at plus-2.2. Nothing about this season was luck. The best team in the league was the best team in the league by playing more of the game in the other end than anybody had in years.
Jonathan Huberdeau had 115 points and 3.88 even-strength points per 60, the 2nd-most of the 393 qualified forwards. Aleksander Barkov had 88 in 67 games. Sam Reinhart had 82. Aaron Ekblad took 59.4 per cent of the chances, the 2nd-highest of the 202 qualified defencemen.
Huberdeau and MacKenzie Weegar have gone to Calgary and Mason Marchment to Dallas. That is 162 points of forward and a 44-point defenceman who played 1,179 attempts away from Aaron Ekblad at 57.4 per cent. Maxim Mamin is off the roster and Jonas Johansson has gone to Colorado.
Matthew Tkachuk arrives from Calgary with 104 points, a plus-57 and the 4th-most even-strength points per 60 in the league. Marc Staal, Nick Cousins, Colin White, Rudolfs Balcers, Chris Tierney and Joshua Mahura arrive to fill the bottom of the roster.
A club that won 58 games has swapped the second-best even-strength producer in hockey for the fourth-best, and given up a 23-minute defenceman to do it.
What the Scout Says
The best five-on-five club in the league, average on both special teams, and 273 points of forward sold in one summer.
Aleksander Barkov does not play a contact game; he plays a stick game — the 16th-most takeaways of the 393 qualified forwards, at 6-3, with two minutes a night short-handed. He is very hard to foul because he is very hard to catch out of position, not because he is fast.
Matthew Tkachuk wins the puck standing still and he arrives because he never left. A 104-point forward who is among the twenty slowest, least-sprinting and least-covering men the league measures. He is in it constantly and comes out even.
Sam Reinhart goes to the same eighteen feet every night and a fifth of them go in. Carter Verhaeghe covers more ground than almost every forward in the league and sprints constantly over it. Sam Bennett plays a straight-line, relentless shift rather than a quick one.
Anton Lundell covers more ground than all but two forwards in the league and he never sprints — a twenty-year-old who was killing penalties on a Presidents' Trophy club.
The blue line is quick and does not defend. Brandon Montour is faster than almost every defenceman in the league and covers more ground than all of them, and defends by skating and by nothing else. Radko Gudas gets there by being where the man is going, not by catching him.

How they were used
2021-22 · 82 games
Measured from shift charts at five-on-five, not projected. Units are built from the strongest partnership outward and ordered by how much they were used; the percentage is the share of the first player’s five-on-five ice time spent alongside each linemate. A low number means the club never settled on a combination. Players who have gone are marked — either to another club, or off an NHL roster altogether, which covers retirement and an unsigned summer alike.
