Ask the book

2025-26 edition Ask a direct question about this edition of the book — who, how many, how common, which group more — and it is answered with a table computed on this page from the edition’s index: the season line, height and age, the on-ice percentiles, the grades and the traits read out of every report. Ask for a view on named players — what a comparison comes down to, what makes a man — and you get the book’s reading of their own pages, and only those. The model turns your question into a query and phrases the result, or reads the pages it is handed; it never originates a figure, and an answer carrying a figure that is on neither the table nor the pages is withheld. It does not forecast, and it says so when a question is outside what the book holds.

Tables are computed on this page from the 2025-26 edition’s index; readings rest on the players’ own pages; the model never counts. Twenty questions an hour.

The read

the numbers, and the eye

Back-to-back champions, 2nd in the league at suppressing chances and 12th on the power play — and about to play a season without Aleksander Barkov.

Who this names 8 of 26 on the roster · 37% of their five-on-five minutes details

Both columns above are searched, and a name counts on the same terms the page links it: in full always, by surname only when one man in the edition wears it. Nothing here says who ought to be named — only who was, so the weighting can be seen rather than guessed at.

Not named here: Uvis Balinskis, Sergei Bobrovsky, Jesper Boqvist, Aaron Ekblad, Jonah Gadjovich, Noah Gregor, Seth Jones, Dmitry Kulikov, Luke Kunin, Eetu Luostarinen, Tomas Nosek, Jeff Petry, Sam Reinhart, Evan Rodrigues, Mackie Samoskevich, Cole Schwindt, Daniil Tarasov, Carter Verhaeghe.

What the Quant Says

98 points and a second consecutive Stanley Cup, from 2nd in shot-attempt share, 3rd in chance share, 7th at creating chances, 2nd at preventing them, 12th on the power play and 6th on the kill. There is no weakness anywhere in the structure.

It was not even a lucky season: 27th in finishing, 14th in goaltending. The regular-season record understates the team and the club has stopped caring — it has now won two Cups from 98- and 92-point seasons and has treated the 82 games as preparation.

And then September. Aleksander Barkov tore both knee ligaments in training camp and will miss the season. He is the best two-way centre in hockey, took the hardest defensive assignment on a champion, ran the penalty kill, and took 16 penalty minutes doing it. Anton Lundell inherits the matchup role at 24. There is no replacement on the roster, no version of this structure that survives his absence intact, and it is the single largest subtraction in this edition.

What the Scout Says

The most completely constructed team in the league, built on a specific idea — win the puck back, be unpleasant, concede nothing from the interior — and applied down to the thirteenth forward.

Aleksander Barkov takes pucks off attackers in the neutral zone as reliably as anybody alive, and the interceptions are how the offence starts; he took 16 penalty minutes in 67 games doing the hardest job in hockey. Gustav Forsling closes gaps at the blue line as well as any defenceman in the league and took 16 penalty minutes at 23 minutes a night. Those two numbers are the club's whole philosophy: defending by arriving early rather than by reaching late.

Around them, deliberate heaviness. Sam Bennett is among the two or three most physically punishing forwards in hockey. Matthew Tkachuk stands where he is not wanted and does not leave. Brad Marchand at 37 is among the most hated opponents of the last twenty years. A.J. Greer took 130 penalty minutes in nine and a half minutes a night. Niko Mikkola is 6-6 and clears his crease by force.

How they were used

2024-25 · 78 games

Measured from shift charts at five-on-five, not projected. Units are built from the strongest partnership outward and ordered by how much they were used; the percentage is the share of the first player’s five-on-five ice time spent alongside each linemate. A low number means the club never settled on a combination. Players who have gone are marked — either to another club, or off an NHL roster altogether, which covers retirement and an unsigned summer alike.
