the numbers, and the eyeThe Stanley Cup champion, and it won with the 11th chance share and goaltending that came in exactly level with the shots it faced.
Who this names 10 of 24 on the roster · 49% of their five-on-five minutes details
Both columns above are searched, and a name counts on the same terms the page links it: in full always, by surname only when one man in the edition wears it. Nothing here says who ought to be named — only who was, so the weighting can be seen rather than guessed at.
Not named here: Bowen Byram, Andrew Cogliano, J.T. Compher, Pavel Francouz, Samuel Girard, Darren Helm, Jonas Johansson, Erik Johnson, Artturi Lehkonen, Kurtis MacDermid, Josh Manson, Jayson Megna, Alex Newhook, Logan O'Connor.
What the Quant Says
56-19-7, 119 points, 2nd in the league and first in the Central. Colorado won the Stanley Cup in six games over Tampa Bay.
312 goals for, 3rd. 234 against, 7th. 7th in shot-attempt share at five-on-five at 52.7 per cent and 11th in chance share at 51.9. 13th at creating chances at even strength and 8th at suppressing them.
At five-on-five: 198 goals scored against 165.4 expected, and 153 conceded against 153.0. The finishing was 3rd in the league at plus-32.6 and the goaltending 16th at exactly zero. That is the whole club in two numbers: it converted chances better than almost anybody and its crease was precisely average.
Cale Makar had 86 points at 25:40 a night and a plus-48. Devon Toews had 57 and a plus-52. Mikko Rantanen had 92 and Nathan MacKinnon 88 in 65 games. Nazem Kadri had 87.
Kadri has gone to Calgary, Andre Burakovsky to Seattle, Darcy Kuemper to Washington, Jack Johnson to Chicago, Nicolas Aube-Kubel to Toronto, Nico Sturm to San Jose and Ryan Murray to Edmonton. Gabriel Landeskog is off the roster.
Alexandar Georgiev arrives from the Rangers with a career .9085, Evan Rodrigues from Pittsburgh, Alex Galchenyuk from Arizona, Brad Hunt from Vancouver and Anton Blidh from Boston.
A champion has lost an 87-point centre, a 61-point winger, its 59-point captain and its starting goaltender. What it has kept is the two fastest defencemen in the league.
What the Scout Says
The two fastest defencemen in the league, a first line whose with-and-without-you data points somewhere uncomfortable, the best finishing team in hockey but two, and a crease handed to a career backup.
Colorado won a Stanley Cup with the 11th chance share and average goaltending, and scored 33 goals more than its chances promised. Every part of that is worth being nervous about, because finishing is the least repeatable of the three.
With Mikko Rantanen on the ice the club took 55.6 per cent of the chances; Nathan MacKinnon without him was at 41.5 across 511 attempts, and Rantanen without MacKinnon at 62.1 across 679. Both samples are real. Cale Makar's own share does not move for anybody: 57.4 without Toews, 56.9 without MacKinnon, 55.5 without Landeskog, 55.0 without Nichushkin.
The roster has lost 87 points, 61 points, its captain and its goaltender, and replaced them with a career-year third-liner and a backup. What it has kept is the best defenceman in hockey, the fastest one, a 92-point winger and a 25-goal five-on-five scorer nobody outside Denver can name.
On the measured record this is still one of the deepest rosters in the league. On the same record, it won last year in a way that does not repeat by itself.

How they were used
2021-22 · 82 games
Measured from shift charts at five-on-five, not projected. Units are built from the strongest partnership outward and ordered by how much they were used; the percentage is the share of the first player’s five-on-five ice time spent alongside each linemate. A low number means the club never settled on a combination. Players who have gone are marked — either to another club, or off an NHL roster altogether, which covers retirement and an unsigned summer alike.
