Ask the book

2024-25 edition Ask a direct question about this edition of the book — who, how many, how common, which group more — and it is answered with a table computed on this page from the edition’s index: the season line, height and age, the on-ice percentiles, the grades and the traits read out of every report. Ask for a view on named players — what a comparison comes down to, what makes a man — and you get the book’s reading of their own pages, and only those. The model turns your question into a query and phrases the result, or reads the pages it is handed; it never originates a figure, and an answer carrying a figure that is on neither the table nor the pages is withheld. It does not forecast, and it says so when a question is outside what the book holds.

Tables are computed on this page from the 2024-25 edition’s index; readings rest on the players’ own pages; the model never counts. Twenty questions an hour.

The read

the numbers, and the eye

Scored more goals than any club in hockey and got the 24th-best goaltending in it — and the whole of the finishing surplus sits on Nathan MacKinnon's ice.

Who this names 14 of 22 on the roster · 76% of their five-on-five minutes details

Both columns above are searched, and a name counts on the same terms the page links it: in full always, by surname only when one man in the edition wears it. Nothing here says who ought to be named — only who was, so the weighting can be seen rather than guessed at.

Not named here: Justus Annunen, Ross Colton, Jonathan Drouin, Alexandar Georgiev, Joel Kiviranta, Artturi Lehkonen, Sam Malinski, Logan O'Connor.

What the Quant Says

107 points, 50-25-7, eighth in the league, and 304 goals — more than any club in hockey scored.

The club took 52.7 per cent of the shot attempts at five-on-five, 6th, and 52.3 per cent of the expected goals, 9th. Good rather than dominant. What made it 304 goals was finishing: 197 goals at five-on-five against an expectation of 173.0, a surplus of 24.0 and second in the league.

And the goaltending came in 10.4 goals worse than the chances faced, 24th. A club that creates at the 8th-best rate and suppresses at the 11th-best has no business being eighth in the standings, and the crease is the whole of the difference.

The finishing surplus came from exactly where you would expect, and the crease gave it back. Nathan MacKinnon scored 51 goals and had 140 points, and his own ice at five-on-five went 100-66 against an expectation of 75.93-54.93 — twenty-four goals of scoring above what the chances were worth, which is the club's entire surplus on one man's ice. Mikko Rantanen's ice went 87-65 against 69.44-55.34, eighteen over. Cale Makar's went 72-65 against 60.46-50.61. The three best players on the club were a long way on the right side of their own expectation, and every one of them conceded above it at the other end.

Josh Manson's ice went 55-48 against 51.80-46.70 and Samuel Girard's 47-51 against 46.90-39.29. The second pair, plus seven and plus twelve. Artturi Lehkonen's 45 games went 39-28 against 29.19-21.17.

That is not a criticism of the depth, which held its own. It is the shape of a 304-goal season: the surplus sits on the men a club would build around anyway, and the reason it returned only 107 points is that all six of those men were conceding above expectation at the other end. Fix the crease and the same forwards win a great deal more; leave it and no amount of first-line finishing covers the gap.

The summer was quiet and the crease was not fixed. Bowen Byram went to Buffalo for Casey Mittelstadt at the deadline; Jack Johnson went to Columbus; Ryan Johansen, Andrew Cogliano and Tomas Tatar left. Calvin de Haan came from Tampa Bay, Parker Kelly from Ottawa, Oliver Kylington from Calgary, John Ludvig from Pittsburgh and Kaapo Kahkonen — 7-24-3 with an .8982 — to back up a goaltender who posted an .8966.

Nathan MacKinnon is 29, Mikko Rantanen 28, Cale Makar 26 and Devon Toews 31. The window is open now and it is not obviously open in four years, and the club has spent this off-season not addressing the one thing separating it from the clubs finishing above it.

What the Scout Says

The two best career plus-minus rates in this edition, the lightest defenceman in it, and 572 penalty minutes in 578 games.

Devon Toews is plus-156 in 397 games and Cale Makar plus-108 in 315 — the two highest rates of anybody in this edition with two hundred and fifty games. They play together and they have played together for four seasons.

Samuel Girard is 5-10 and 170 pounds, the lightest defenceman in this edition, and he took the best chance share of any defenceman on the club. Cale Makar is 6-0 and 187 and has 86 goals in 315 games from the blue line. Neither is built the way a modern defenceman is supposed to be built and both are better than the ones who are.

Josh Manson is 6-3 and 218 with 572 penalty minutes in 578 games, and he is the reason the other three are allowed to play the way they do.

Mikko Rantanen is 6-4 and 228 — the heaviest forward on the roster by nineteen pounds — and Valeri Nichushkin is 6-4 and 210. Miles Wood has 502 penalty minutes in 476 games. The forward group is larger and more hostile than its reputation.

How they were used

2023-24 · 82 games

Measured from shift charts at five-on-five, not projected. Units are built from the strongest partnership outward and ordered by how much they were used; the percentage is the share of the first player’s five-on-five ice time spent alongside each linemate. A low number means the club never settled on a combination. Players who have gone are marked — either to another club, or off an NHL roster altogether, which covers retirement and an unsigned summer alike.
