The read
the numbers, and the eye3rd in the league in shot-attempt share and 5th at suppressing chances, and the only elite team in this edition whose record was not flattered by a single bounce.
Who this names 6 of 21 on the roster · 35% of their five-on-five minutes details
Both columns above are searched, and a name counts on the same terms the page links it: in full always, by surname only when one man in the edition wears it. Nothing here says who ought to be named — only who was, so the weighting can be seen rather than guessed at.
Not named here: Mackenzie Blackwood, Brent Burns, Ross Colton, Jack Drury, Samuel Girard, Ivan Ivan, Joel Kiviranta, Sam Malinski, Keaton Middleton, Martin Necas, Brock Nelson, Valeri Nichushkin, Victor Olofsson, Devon Toews, Scott Wedgewood.
What the Quant Says
3rd in the league in shot-attempt share at 54.2 per cent, 6th in creating chances at even strength, 5th at preventing them, 277 goals for and 234 against. By process this is a top-five team in hockey, and the process is where the argument for it lives.
What makes this edition's Colorado different from most contenders is that none of it is borrowed. The finishing was 5.4 goals below expectation, 20th in the league. The goaltending was 0.1 goals above it, 18th. A club with this record and no help from either is unusual, and it means the 102 points are the floor of what the roster is rather than the ceiling.
The two soft places are a power play that is 15th with the 6th-most time on it, and a crease where the starter has never been a starter. Neither is a structural problem. Both are the difference between a very good team and one that wins a series it should not.
What the Scout Says
Two players who can decide any game, a supporting cast assembled to be exactly what those two need, and a blue line that is the best in hockey at the top and thin in a specific and dangerous way underneath.
Nathan MacKinnon is the fastest hard skater in the league — speed carrying 200 pounds, which is the rare combination, because most men who move like this get removed from pucks and he does not. Cale Makar is not fast in a straight line so much as instantly at top speed, with edges that let him change direction without losing any of it, and forecheckers do not pin him because they cannot get close enough to.
Around them the club has stocked men who do the unglamorous half. Artturi Lehkonen goes into corners against defencemen with 50 pounds on him. Parker Kelly finishes every check available to him and kills. Logan O'Connor is the most dangerous forechecker on the roster because he arrives before the defenceman has turned. Josh Manson is one of the more feared men in the league to meet in a corner and is almost never available. The soft place is the crease, and the other one is what happens on a night when the other club decides to play through the front of Colorado's net.

How they were used
2024-25 · 78 games
Measured from shift charts at five-on-five, not projected. Units are built from the strongest partnership outward and ordered by how much they were used; the percentage is the share of the first player’s five-on-five ice time spent alongside each linemate. A low number means the club never settled on a combination. Players who have gone are marked — either to another club, or off an NHL roster altogether, which covers retirement and an unsigned summer alike.
