The read
the numbers, and the eyeTwelfth in attempts, sixteenth and seventeenth at even strength, nineteenth on both special teams — the most thoroughly average club in this edition, and 27th in the crease. Then the summer took the top four defence and the goaltender.
Who this names 14 of 24 on the roster · 68% of their five-on-five minutes details
Both columns above are searched, and a name counts on the same terms the page links it: in full always, by surname only when one man in the edition wears it. Nothing here says who ought to be named — only who was, so the weighting can be seen rather than guessed at.
Not named here: Rasmus Andersson, Walker Duehr, Joel Hanley, Dryden Hunt, Andrei Kuzmenko, Daniil Miromanov, Brayden Pachal, Kevin Rooney, Yegor Sharangovich, Dan Vladar.
What the Quant Says
81 points, 38-39-5, and twenty-third in the league. Sixth in the Pacific.
This is the most thoroughly average club in this edition, and it is not close. Twelfth in shot attempts at five-on-five, 19th in expected goals, 17th at creating chances at even strength, 17th at suppressing them, 15th in finishing, 17th on the power play and 19th on the penalty kill. Seven measures, none of them further than five places from the middle.
And the goaltending came in 16.8 goals worse than the chances faced, 27th in the league. At five-on-five the club conceded 181 goals against an expectation of 164.2. Take those seventeen goals back and this is a playoff team, which is the entire content of the season.
The summer was a demolition and it was deliberate. Jacob Markstrom went to New Jersey, Noah Hanifin to Vegas, Chris Tanev to Toronto, Elias Lindholm to Vancouver and then Boston, Andrew Mangiapane to Washington and Oliver Kylington to Colorado. Dillon Dube and Adam Ruzicka are off the roster.
That is the starting goaltender, two of the top four defencemen and three top-nine forwards in one off-season, from a club that finished twenty-third.
In came Kevin Bahl from New Jersey, Anthony Mantha from Vegas, Jake Bean from Columbus, Tyson Barrie from Nashville and Ryan Lomberg from Florida. Bahl is 24 and 6-6; the rest are 30 or over.
What is left is old in the middle and young at the edges. Mikael Backlund is 35 with 990 games, Nazem Kadri 34 with 903, Tyson Barrie 33 with 809, Blake Coleman 32 and Jonathan Huberdeau 31. Against that: Connor Zary is 23 and scored 14 goals in 63 games, Matt Coronato is 21, Martin Pospisil 24, Kevin Bahl 24 and Dustin Wolf 23.
The clearest single decision on this page is handing the crease to a 166-pound seventh-round pick. A club that was average at everything and 27th in goaltending has bet the next three years on it being the cheapest fix in the sport.
What the Scout Says
A 6-6 defenceman, a 6-5 winger at 240 pounds, and a 173-pound centre with 109 penalty minutes.
Kevin Bahl was added at 6-6 and 230 and clears the front of his own net by force, on 82 penalty minutes in 82 games. He is the largest man on the roster and the blue line has needed one.
Anthony Mantha is 6-5 and 240 and cannot be moved off the front of the net. Blake Coleman is 5-11 and 199 with 431 penalty minutes in 542 games and forechecks harder than anybody here. Ryan Lomberg is 5-9 and 184 with 359 penalty minutes in 257 games and will fight men a foot taller.
Martin Pospisil is 6-2 and 173 pounds and took 109 penalty minutes in 63 games — the highest total on the club, from the lightest forward on it. That combination is not sustainable and it is genuinely effective while it lasts.
The top of the roster is not physical. Nazem Kadri is 185 pounds. Jonathan Huberdeau is 200 and does not play through anybody. MacKenzie Weegar is 6-0 and 206 and defends with position. Matt Coronato is 5-10 and 183.

How they were used
2023-24 · 82 games
Measured from shift charts at five-on-five, not projected. Units are built from the strongest partnership outward and ordered by how much they were used; the percentage is the share of the first player’s five-on-five ice time spent alongside each linemate. A low number means the club never settled on a combination. Players who have gone are marked — either to another club, or off an NHL roster altogether, which covers retirement and an unsigned summer alike.
