Forty assists is the largest source of distribution on the club and twelve goals is the fewest he has scored in a full season since he was nineteen.
51.1 per cent of the expected goals at five-on-five over 1,120 minutes, the 61st percentile — a good share, and the minus-29 belongs to the crease behind him.
The Finesse Game
143 attempts at a median of 23 feet, with 42 per cent from inside 20 and 17 per cent from beyond 40, converting at 8.39 per cent against a career 12.20 across 1,844 shots.
The passing is the player and it is still there. He holds the puck below the goal line and waits for the seam rather than forcing it, and 495 career assists in 831 games is a distributor’s record of the first order.
The shot has gone. Twelve goals on 143 attempts from a man who scored 30 twice in Florida is the whole of the disappointment, and it is a shooting rate rather than a chance problem.
The Physical Game
6-1 and 200. He does not forecheck with force, he does not win pucks on the wall, and he plays away from contact by design.
49 penalty minutes in 81 games and 426 in 831 for his career is a moderate rate for a player who does not hit anybody.
The Intangibles
Third overall in 2011 by Florida, and 831 games and 720 points at 31, including a 115-point season two years before he arrived here.
He signed an eight-year contract on the day he was traded and has not been the same player since. Fifty-two points and the sixty-first percentile of chances is a good second-line winger, and it is a long way from what the contract assumed — which is now the largest single problem on this club’s books.
