Ask the book

2022-23 edition Ask a direct question about this edition of the book — who, how many, how common, which group more — and it is answered with a table computed on this page from the edition’s index: the season line, height and age, the on-ice percentiles, the grades and the traits read out of every report. Ask for a view on named players — what a comparison comes down to, what makes a man — and you get the book’s reading of their own pages, and only those. The model turns your question into a query and phrases the result, or reads the pages it is handed; it never originates a figure, and an answer carrying a figure that is on neither the table nor the pages is withheld. It does not forecast, and it says so when a question is outside what the book holds.

Tables are computed on this page from the 2022-23 edition’s index; readings rest on the players’ own pages; the model never counts. Twenty questions an hour.

The read

the numbers, and the eye

A hundred and eleven points, 3rd in chance share and 2nd on the penalty kill — and then it lost 219 points of left wing in a single summer.

Who this names 11 of 20 on the roster · 58% of their five-on-five minutes details

Both columns above are searched, and a name counts on the same terms the page links it: in full always, by surname only when one man in the edition wears it. Nothing here says who ought to be named — only who was, so the weighting can be seen rather than guessed at.

Not named here: Rasmus Andersson, Dillon Dube, Noah Hanifin, Trevor Lewis, Milan Lucic, Brett Ritchie, Adam Ruzicka, Chris Tanev, Dan Vladar.

What the Quant Says

50-21-11, 111 points, 6th in the league and first in the Pacific.

293 goals for, 6th. 208 against, 3rd. 3rd in shot-attempt share at five-on-five at 55.6 per cent and 3rd in chance share at 55.2. 3rd at creating chances at even strength, 4th at suppressing them, and 2nd on the penalty kill.

At five-on-five: 196 goals scored against 188.6 expected, and 139 conceded against 152.9. The finishing was 11th at plus-7.4 and the goaltending 5th at plus-13.9. There is no soft number anywhere on this page. This was one of the four or five best-built teams in hockey.

Johnny Gaudreau had 115 points and a plus-64. Matthew Tkachuk had 104 and a plus-57. Elias Lindholm scored 42 goals. Jacob Markstrom won 37 games with nine shutouts.

Gaudreau has gone to Columbus for nothing, Tkachuk to Florida, Sean Monahan to Montreal, Erik Gudbranson to Columbus, Calle Jarnkrok to Toronto and Ryan Carpenter to the Rangers, and Oliver Kylington is off the roster.

Jonathan Huberdeau and MacKenzie Weegar arrive from Florida in the Tkachuk trade, Nazem Kadri from the Stanley Cup champions, and Kevin Rooney from the Rangers. Tyler Toffoli arrived at the deadline and is here for a full season.

Two hundred and nineteen points of left wing left in one summer and 202 points of forward arrived to replace them. Every question about this season is a version of the same question: was that a team, or was it two wingers?

What the Scout Says

One of the four or five best-built teams in hockey, gutted at the top of the lineup in eight weeks, and still 3rd in chance share on paper.

Johnny Gaudreau and Matthew Tkachuk played 2,024 attempts together and took 62.3 per cent of them. Apart, Gaudreau was at 42.0 and Tkachuk at 48.7 — on 309 and 248 attempts, which is a fragment and the only measured answer anyone has.

The rest of the roster is intact and it is excellent. Lindholm scored 42 and kills 2:07. The Backlund–Coleman–Mangiapane line took nearly sixty per cent of the chances and nobody touched it. Tanev is plus-35 with 22 penalty minutes. Zadorov is 6-7 and moves like a winger. Markstrom won 37 games.

What is not intact is the top line, and what has replaced it is a 29-year-old winger who covers less ground than almost anybody in the league and a 31-year-old centre coming off a career year on the Stanley Cup champions.

The measured case is that this is still a very good hockey team. The unmeasured case is that 62.3 per cent was two specific players, and Calgary has neither of them.

How they were used

2021-22 · 82 games

Measured from shift charts at five-on-five, not projected. Units are built from the strongest partnership outward and ordered by how much they were used; the percentage is the share of the first player’s five-on-five ice time spent alongside each linemate. A low number means the club never settled on a combination. Players who have gone are marked — either to another club, or off an NHL roster altogether, which covers retirement and an unsigned summer alike.
