Ask the book

2025-26 edition Ask a direct question about this edition of the book — who, how many, how common, which group more — and it is answered with a table computed on this page from the edition’s index: the season line, height and age, the on-ice percentiles, the grades and the traits read out of every report. Ask for a view on named players — what a comparison comes down to, what makes a man — and you get the book’s reading of their own pages, and only those. The model turns your question into a query and phrases the result, or reads the pages it is handed; it never originates a figure, and an answer carrying a figure that is on neither the table nor the pages is withheld. It does not forecast, and it says so when a question is outside what the book holds.

Tables are computed on this page from the 2025-26 edition’s index; readings rest on the players’ own pages; the model never counts. Twenty questions an hour.

The read

the numbers, and the eye

The worst power play in the league, 29th in finishing, 5th in goaltending, and a playoff place missed on a tiebreaker — all of it explained by a 166-pound rookie.

Who this names 11 of 21 on the roster · 50% of their five-on-five minutes details

Both columns above are searched, and a name counts on the same terms the page links it: in full always, by surname only when one man in the edition wears it. Nothing here says who ought to be named — only who was, so the weighting can be seen rather than guessed at.

Not named here: Rasmus Andersson, Kevin Bahl, Jake Bean, Blake Coleman, Joel Farabee, Joel Hanley, Jonathan Huberdeau, Justin Kirkland, Daniil Miromanov, Yegor Sharangovich.

What the Quant Says

96 points and a playoff place missed on a tiebreaker, from a club nobody expected to be near one.

The construction is unusual. 7th in the league in shot-attempt share and 22nd in chance share — they control the puck and do not create much with it. 29th in finishing and 5th in goaltending, which is a net of roughly 2 goals from the two phases a team controls least, and therefore not the explanation for anything.

What is left is a genuinely competent defensive team with no scoring and no power play. 225 goals is sixth-fewest in hockey and the power play was 31st, and those two facts are the same fact. The reason to be interested anyway is Dustin Wolf at 24, Matt Coronato at 22, Connor Zary at 24 and Morgan Frost at 26 — and the reason to be careful is that Kadri is 34, Backlund 36 and Huberdeau's shooting rate was the highest of his life.

What the Scout Says

A hard, structured, slow-scoring club built around a goaltender who weighs less than several of its forwards' equipment bags.

Dustin Wolf judges his depth in the crease shot by shot rather than by rule — further out than a big goaltender on a clean look, deeper on a scramble — and he is square more consistently than almost anyone in the league. What he cannot do is cover a net by occupying it, so a screened point shot he does not see is a goal in a way it is not for a 6-4 man. MacKenzie Weegar beats a forecheck with a first pass rather than with his feet, plays considerably heavier than 6 feet and 206, and is the most reliable player on the roster.

What surrounds them is willing and short of skill. Nazem Kadri at 34 goes to the net front, initiates contact, and is still one of the more genuinely disliked opponents of his era. Martin Pospisil is 173 pounds and hits everything. Ryan Lomberg is 5-9 and fights men a foot taller. Adam Klapka is 6-8, the largest forward in the league, and cannot keep up with a fast transition. Brayden Pachal took 88 penalty minutes in fourteen minutes a night.

How they were used

2024-25 · 79 games

Measured from shift charts at five-on-five, not projected. Units are built from the strongest partnership outward and ordered by how much they were used; the percentage is the share of the first player’s five-on-five ice time spent alongside each linemate. A low number means the club never settled on a combination. Players who have gone are marked — either to another club, or off an NHL roster altogether, which covers retirement and an unsigned summer alike.
