The read
the numbers, and the eyeThe 5th-best chance suppression in the league and 253 goals against — the 29th-ranked goaltending, and all four men who played it are gone or replaced.
Who this names 5 of 25 on the roster · 20% of their five-on-five minutes details
Both columns above are searched, and a name counts on the same terms the page links it: in full always, by surname only when one man in the edition wears it. Nothing here says who ought to be named — only who was, so the weighting can be seen rather than guessed at.
Not named here: Zachary Aston-Reese, Nicolas Aube-Kubel, Jordie Benn, TJ Brodie, Michael Bunting, Kyle Clifford, Mark Giordano, Justin Holl, Calle Jarnkrok, Alexander Kerfoot, Timothy Liljegren, Victor Mete, Matt Murray, Jake Muzzin, William Nylander, Morgan Rielly, Ilya Samsonov, Rasmus Sandin, Wayne Simmonds, John Tavares.
What the Quant Says
54-21-7, 115 points, 4th in the league. 315 goals for, 2nd; 253 against, 18th.
And 6th in attempt share at 53.6 per cent, 5th in chance share at 54.8. The structure is a top-six club in both directions: 5th in expected goals for per 60 at even strength and 5th against.
Finishing rated plus-19.6, 4th and goaltending minus-26.9, 29th. The five-on-five ledger: goals for 208 against an expectation of 188.4, goals against 182 against an expectation of 155.1.
Twenty more in front than the model asked and twenty-seven more against. The second of those numbers is the club.
A hundred and fifteen points off the 5th-best chance suppression in hockey and the 29th-ranked crease. Everything else in this chapter is a detail beside it.
What the Scout Says
Toronto finished 4th in the league in expected goals against per 60 at even strength and 18th in goals against. The five-on-five ledger reads 182 goals conceded against an expectation of 155.1 — twenty-seven more than the model asked.
That is the whole club, and it is not a small thing to fix or an easy one to blame on any one man. Four goaltenders played: Jack Campbell forty-nine games at .9140, Petr Mrazek twenty, Erik Kallgren fourteen at .8883, Joseph Woll four. Campbell was 17th of fifty-three and the rating was still minus-26.9.
In front of them the structure is genuinely excellent and the deployment is the most polarised in this batch. Auston Matthews started 62.1 per cent of his end-zone shifts in the attacking end and Mitch Marner 62.0 — the 31st- and 32nd-highest of the 652 skaters who took two hundred end-zone starts. David Kampf started 24.3 per cent, the 5th-lowest in the league.
One hundred and thirty-six attacking-zone starts for Kampf against 424 in his own end, and a 51.3 per cent chance share out of it. Pierre Engvall took the 43rd-hardest chair and came out at 55.2 per cent. The club buried two men so completely that the top line almost never had to defend, and both of the buried men broke even or better.
Matthews is the other half. He leads all 393 forwards in takeaways per 60, is 2nd in shots per 60, and finished 4th in both possession columns and 4th in even-strength scoring — plus the goal title. All eight team-mates with a recorded with-and-without line took a better share of the expected goals beside him than apart from him, by margins from seven points to sixteen.
A club structured this well conceding 253 goals is a crease problem stated as plainly as this book can state one.

How they were used
2021-22 · 82 games
Measured from shift charts at five-on-five, not projected. Units are built from the strongest partnership outward and ordered by how much they were used; the percentage is the share of the first player’s five-on-five ice time spent alongside each linemate. A low number means the club never settled on a combination. Players who have gone are marked — either to another club, or off an NHL roster altogether, which covers retirement and an unsigned summer alike.
