The read
the numbers, and the eye108 points and a division title on 47.8 per cent of the shot attempts, twenty-eight goals of finishing and goaltending, and a 2-0 series lead surrendered in the second round — then the club's best winger left for nothing but a third-line centre.
Who this names 15 of 24 on the roster · 61% of their five-on-five minutes details
Both columns above are searched, and a name counts on the same terms the page links it: in full always, by surname only when one man in the edition wears it. Nothing here says who ought to be named — only who was, so the weighting can be seen rather than guessed at.
Not named here: Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Steven Lorentz, Jake McCabe, Bobby McMann, William Nylander, Morgan Rielly, Nick Robertson, Anthony Stolarz, Joseph Woll.
What the Quant Says
108 points, 52-26-4, an Atlantic Division title, and a second-round exit in seven games after leading the series 2-0.
The club took 47.8 per cent of the shot attempts at five-on-five — 25th in the league — and 50.2 per cent of the expected goals, 15th. It was 21st at creating chances at even strength and 15th at suppressing them, and it finished with 268 goals and 231 against because finishing was 12.6 goals better than expectation and goaltending 15.2 — 7th and 6th in the league.
Twenty-eight goals of conversion is the difference between a division title and a wild card, and only part of it is repeatable. The finishing half is more defensible than most: this is a club whose goalscorers stand in the blue paint. Knies at a median of 14 feet and Tavares at 19 will convert at high rates again. The goaltending half rests on a 6-6 goaltender who has never played 35 games in a season and a 27-year-old who had never played 30 before last year.
Then the summer, which was the largest thing that has happened to this club in a decade. Mitch Marner left for Vegas in a sign-and-trade that returned Nicolas Roy — a 6-4 third-line centre with 31 points — for a winger who had 102 points the season before. Nothing about the arithmetic of that is defensible and the club had no better option.
Brandon Carlo and Scott Laughton were acquired at the deadline for a first-round pick and change. Matias Maccelli came from Utah, Dakota Joshua from Vancouver, Henry Thrun from San Jose, Michael Pezzetta and Cayden Primeau were signed. Pontus Holmberg went to Tampa Bay, David Kampf to Vancouver and Ryan Reaves to San Jose.
It is a club that has been the same for nine years and has just been changed by subtraction.
What the Scout Says
The heaviest top six this club has had in twenty years, and it lost its best passer in the summer.
Matthew Knies is 6-3 and 232 pounds and shoots from a median of fourteen feet. He wins every wall battle he enters, he cannot be moved from the front of a net, and he forechecks with genuine force. On a club that has been called soft for a decade, he is the answer it drafted itself.
John Tavares is 6-1 and 217 and stands in the crease at 34 and takes 46 penalty minutes' worth of cross-checks answering it. Auston Matthews is 6-3 and 215 and plays a heavier game than the reputation — he protects the puck below the goal line and he is genuinely hard to move off a wall.
Underneath, it is edge. Max Domi is 5-10 and 208 with 706 penalty minutes in 735 career games and fights people much larger than he is. Dakota Joshua at 6-3 and Michael Pezzetta at 222 pounds were both added in the summer.
And the blue line is enormous and quiet. Brandon Carlo is 6-5, Simon Benoit 6-4, Philippe Myers 6-5, and Chris Tanev blocks shots with parts of the body nobody should.

How they were used
2024-25 · 78 games
Measured from shift charts at five-on-five, not projected. Units are built from the strongest partnership outward and ordered by how much they were used; the percentage is the share of the first player’s five-on-five ice time spent alongside each linemate. A low number means the club never settled on a combination. Players who have gone are marked — either to another club, or off an NHL roster altogether, which covers retirement and an unsigned summer alike.
