The read
the numbers, and the eyeThe 4th-best even-strength chance rate in hockey, the 26th-ranked finishing, and seventeen of twenty-four skaters under seventy games.
Who this names 10 of 24 on the roster · 47% of their five-on-five minutes details
Both columns above are searched, and a name counts on the same terms the page links it: in full always, by surname only when one man in the edition wears it. Nothing here says who ought to be named — only who was, so the weighting can be seen rather than guessed at.
Not named here: Michael Amadio, Laurent Brossoit, William Carrier, Adin Hill, Brett Howden, Ben Hutton, Keegan Kolesar, Jake Leschyshyn, Alex Pietrangelo, Jonas Rondbjerg, Nicolas Roy, Chandler Stephenson, Shea Theodore, Logan Thompson.
What the Quant Says
43-31-8, 94 points, 17th in the league. 266 goals for, 12th; 248 against, 15th.
And 8th in attempt share at 52.6 per cent, 9th in chance share at 52.7. The structure was a top-ten club in both directions and the fourth-best in hockey at generating chances per minute of even-strength ice, at 2.918 expected goals for per 60.
Finishing rated minus-5.8, 26th and goaltending plus-4.6, tied with St Louis for 10th. The five-on-five ledger: goals for 184 against an expectation of 189.8, goals against 166 against an expectation of 170.6.
Six short in front, four fewer against. A club that controlled the play and shot below its expectation, in front of a crease that was slightly better than average.
Vegas is not one of the sixteen clubs that played in the spring of 2022. It appears in the 2018 and 2019 brackets in this book.
Seventeen of the twenty-four skaters who dressed for this club played fewer than seventy games. That is the season, and everything below is an argument about how much of it the finishing column can be blamed for.
What the Scout Says
Vegas generated the 4th-highest rate of expected goals per sixty minutes of even-strength ice in the league and finished 26th at converting them. Those two facts are the season.
Ninety-four points and no postseason, out of the 8th-best attempt share and the 9th-best chance share in hockey. The five-on-five goal column reads 184 for against an expectation of 189.8, and 166 against an expectation of 170.6 — a club that was six short at one end and four ahead at the other, which is nothing like enough to explain missing.
The explanation is the availability. Seventeen of the twenty-four skaters who dressed played fewer than seventy games. Mark Stone played thirty-seven, Jack Eichel thirty-four, Alec Martinez twenty-six, Max Pacioretty thirty-nine, Nicolas Hague fifty-two, Reilly Smith fifty-six, Zach Whitecloud fifty-nine. Alex Pietrangelo's eighty and Chandler Stephenson's seventy-nine were the only two full seasons among the men who mattered.
Two forwards on this roster carried a five-on-five ledger that fell short of its own expectation by more than seven goals: William Karlsson by nine and Jonathan Marchessault by seven and a half. One man went the other way — Zach Whitecloud, by nine and a half, from the second-hardest chair on the blue line.
The blue line produces the two most extreme figures in the chapter and they belong to the same trait. Brayden McNabb blocked more shots per sixty than any of the 202 qualified defencemen in the league, and Alec Martinez, across twenty-six games, blocked more than McNabb. The same blue line contains the man who leads all 202 in takeaways and the man who is 8th.
Phil Kessel arrives at 35 with 399 career goals, forty-four assists, and the 2nd-fewest hits per 60 of all 393 forwards.

How they were used
2021-22 · 82 games
Measured from shift charts at five-on-five, not projected. Units are built from the strongest partnership outward and ordered by how much they were used; the percentage is the share of the first player’s five-on-five ice time spent alongside each linemate. A low number means the club never settled on a combination. Players who have gone are marked — either to another club, or off an NHL roster altogether, which covers retirement and an unsigned summer alike.
