Ask the book

2022-23 edition Ask a direct question about this edition of the book — who, how many, how common, which group more — and it is answered with a table computed on this page from the edition’s index: the season line, height and age, the on-ice percentiles, the grades and the traits read out of every report. Ask for a view on named players — what a comparison comes down to, what makes a man — and you get the book’s reading of their own pages, and only those. The model turns your question into a query and phrases the result, or reads the pages it is handed; it never originates a figure, and an answer carrying a figure that is on neither the table nor the pages is withheld. It does not forecast, and it says so when a question is outside what the book holds.

Tables are computed on this page from the 2022-23 edition’s index; readings rest on the players’ own pages; the model never counts. Twenty questions an hour.

Vegas Golden Knights Goaltender

Undrafted, twenty NHL games, and a .9139 on 569 shots that is the best number in this crease.

This Season So Far

The 2022-23 season has not started. The empty row above is his, and both it and this paragraph fill in on their own from the morning after he first plays: what he has done, what it is worth against his own last season, and the run he is on when the two disagree.

Last Season

19 games, 10-5-3, a .9139 save percentage and a 2.68 goals-against, one shutout on 569 shots. Undrafted, and twenty NHL games across two seasons out of it.

Nineteen games is short of the twenty-five this book requires before it will place a goaltender in the league distribution, so what follows is described rather than ranked.

The Physical Game

6-4 and 207 pounds, and 25 years old.

Two seasons and 571 career shots at .9142, of which 569 came last year — the other two were a single relief appearance in 2020-21.

So there is exactly one season in the file and it read .9139 across 569 shots with a 10-5-3 record.

Undrafted out of Brock University, signed as a free agent, and 25 years old in his first NHL season. That is a late and unusual road, and the men who take it are the ones this book is least able to forecast.

The Mental Game

Vegas rated 11th in the league in goaltending at plus-4.6 goals saved above expectation, tied with St Louis. His .9139 was the best of the three save percentages in that crease, and Laurent Brossoit’s .8946 across 588 shots was the worst.

The skaters in front finished 8th in attempt share and 4th in expected goals for per sixty at even strength, so the number was produced behind real support and should be discounted for it.

Ten wins in nineteen appearances on a club that missed by a handful of points.

The Intangibles

Nothing here measures technique, and 569 shots would not settle it if it did.

What it measures is a 25-year-old who has faced 571 NHL shots and stopped 91.4 per cent of them.

The crease he is competing for took 44 games from Robin Lehner last season, and Lehner does not appear in this chapter. Adin Hill arrives with 1,972 career shots at .9082 and no season above twenty-five games. Brossoit has 2,809 at .9053 and no two years that agree.

Three goaltenders, none of whom has ever been a starter, on a club whose skaters were the 8th-best possession group in hockey. The 569 shots are the smallest sample of the three and the best number of the three, and which of those two facts matters more is the whole question in the Vegas crease.
