Ask the book

2025-26 edition Ask a direct question about this edition of the book — who, how many, how common, which group more — and it is answered with a table computed on this page from the edition’s index: the season line, height and age, the on-ice percentiles, the grades and the traits read out of every report. Ask for a view on named players — what a comparison comes down to, what makes a man — and you get the book’s reading of their own pages, and only those. The model turns your question into a query and phrases the result, or reads the pages it is handed; it never originates a figure, and an answer carrying a figure that is on neither the table nor the pages is withheld. It does not forecast, and it says so when a question is outside what the book holds.

Tables are computed on this page from the 2025-26 edition’s index; readings rest on the players’ own pages; the model never counts. Twenty questions an hour.

The read

the numbers, and the eye

Sixteenth in the league at creating chances, eighth at suppressing them, and thirty-two goals of goaltending — the largest single-man effect in this edition, and a Presidents' Trophy.

Who this names 18 of 23 on the roster · 83% of their five-on-five minutes details

Both columns above are searched, and a name counts on the same terms the page links it: in full always, by surname only when one man in the edition wears it. Nothing here says who ought to be named — only who was, so the weighting can be seen rather than guessed at.

Not named here: Eric Comrie, Haydn Fleury, Alex Iafallo, Colin Miller, Neal Pionk.

What the Quant Says

116 points, 56-22-4, and the Presidents' Trophy. A seven-game win over St. Louis and a six-game loss to Dallas.

The club was 16th in the league at creating chances at even strength and 8th at suppressing them. It took 50.2 per cent of the shot attempts at five-on-five, 13th, and 51.8 per cent of the expected goals, 9th. That is a good hockey team and it is not the best hockey team in the league by any of those measures.

And it conceded 114 goals at five-on-five against an expectation of 146. Thirty-two goals, 1st in the league, in one man's crease.

This is the cleanest example in the edition of a result that belongs to a goaltender. It is not a criticism of the club and it is not a warning that the wins were fake — Connor Hellebuyck has posted a .9176 across 568 games and ten seasons, and a goaltender who has done it that long is not a shooting percentage. It is a statement about where the margin lives. Strip thirty-two goals out of the ledger and this is a 95-point club.

The second thing worth saying is that the roster underneath is aging and thinning. Mark Scheifele is 32, Adam Lowry 32, Nino Niederreiter 33, Dylan DeMelo 32, Luke Schenn 35 and Vladislav Namestnikov 32. The young end is Cole Perfetti at 23, Dylan Samberg at 26 and Gabriel Vilardi at 26, and there is not much behind them.

The summer subtracted. Nikolaj Ehlers signed with Carolina, Mason Appleton went to Detroit and Rasmus Kupari is off the roster. Gustav Nyquist, Tanner Pearson, Cole Koepke and Walker Duehr were added — four bottom-six forwards aged 36, 33, 27 and 27, replacing a 29-year-old who scored 24 goals.

Kyle Connor is a year from unrestricted free agency. That, and the 32-year-old goaltender, are the two facts that decide what this franchise is in three years.

What the Scout Says

A 6-5 captain, a 6-7 defenceman, the best goaltender in the world, and a top line that does not touch anybody.

Connor Hellebuyck plays deeper than almost anybody at this level and the rebound control is the best in the league. Everything on this page is downstream of that.

Adam Lowry is 6-5 and 210 and among the hardest forwards in the league to play against — he forechecks first and wins pucks below the goal line against defencemen who cannot reach around him. Nino Niederreiter is 6-2 and 218 and forechecks with genuine force. Morgan Barron is 6-4 and 220.

The blue line has the weight. Logan Stanley is 6-7 and 231 with 78 penalty minutes, Luke Schenn is 225 and still hits as hard as anybody in the league, and Dylan Samberg is 6-4 and 216 and clears the front of his own net by force.

And the top of the roster does none of it. Kyle Connor is 183 pounds and does not play a physical game at all. Cole Perfetti is 5-11 and 185. Josh Morrissey is 195 and does not clear his crease.

How they were used

2024-25 · 79 games

Measured from shift charts at five-on-five, not projected. Units are built from the strongest partnership outward and ordered by how much they were used; the percentage is the share of the first player’s five-on-five ice time spent alongside each linemate. A low number means the club never settled on a combination. Players who have gone are marked — either to another club, or off an NHL roster altogether, which covers retirement and an unsigned summer alike.
