Ask the book

2022-23 edition Ask a direct question about this edition of the book — who, how many, how common, which group more — and it is answered with a table computed on this page from the edition’s index: the season line, height and age, the on-ice percentiles, the grades and the traits read out of every report. Ask for a view on named players — what a comparison comes down to, what makes a man — and you get the book’s reading of their own pages, and only those. The model turns your question into a query and phrases the result, or reads the pages it is handed; it never originates a figure, and an answer carrying a figure that is on neither the table nor the pages is withheld. It does not forecast, and it says so when a question is outside what the book holds.

Tables are computed on this page from the 2022-23 edition’s index; readings rest on the players’ own pages; the model never counts. Twenty questions an hour.

The read

the numbers, and the eye

Seventeen goals short of expectation at five-on-five, the 30th-ranked finishing in the league, and the crease that kept it respectable.

Who this names 11 of 21 on the roster · 59% of their five-on-five minutes details

Both columns above are searched, and a name counts on the same terms the page links it: in full always, by surname only when one man in the edition wears it. Nothing here says who ought to be named — only who was, so the weighting can be seen rather than guessed at.

Not named here: Mason Appleton, Morgan Barron, Kyle Capobianco, Brenden Dillon, Sam Gagner, Axel Jonsson-Fjallby, Neal Pionk, David Rittich, Logan Stanley, Blake Wheeler.

What the Quant Says

39-32-11, 89 points, 19th in the league. 252 goals for, 17th; 257 against, 20th.

And 18th in attempt share at 49.4 per cent, 16th in chance share at 50.1. The structure is the middle of the league in both directions, which on its own would have been a playoff club.

Finishing rated minus-17.2, 30th and goaltending plus-10.5, 8th. The five-on-five ledger: goals for 156 against an expectation of 173.2, goals against 162 against an expectation of 172.5.

Seventeen short in front and ten and a half fewer against. Only Los Angeles and Dallas finished worse than this club at converting the chances it made.

Fifteen of the nineteen Winnipeg skaters who played four hundred five-on-five minutes were short of their own expectation at the attacking end, and six of them by more than five goals.

Winnipeg is not one of the sixteen clubs that played in the spring of 2022.

What the Scout Says

Winnipeg scored 156 goals at five-on-five against an expectation of 173.2 and finished 30th in the league in finishing. That is the season, and it is spread across the whole roster rather than concentrated in one or two men.

Fifteen of the nineteen skaters who played four hundred five-on-five minutes came in short at the attacking end. Adam Lowry by more than nineteen goals, Josh Morrissey by eleven and a half, Dylan DeMelo by ten and a half, Nate Schmidt by nearly nine, Zachary Sanford by eight and a half, Pierre-Luc Dubois by six and a half.

Lowry's is the largest shortfall of the 644 skaters in this edition who played four hundred five-on-five minutes, and Morrissey's is the 8th-largest. Two of the eight worst in the league, on one roster.

The structure that produced those chances was 18th in attempt share and 16th in chances — the middle of the league — and the crease that kept the season respectable rated 8th. Connor Hellebuyck faced more shots than any goaltender in hockey and was worth ten and a half goals over expectation for it.

The ice-time distribution is the strangest thing in the chapter. Kyle Connor played the 4th-largest forward workload of 393 and Mark Scheifele the 5th; Dominic Toninato played the smallest of all 393 and Jansen Harkins the 3rd-smallest. Two of the three shortest shifts in the league and two of the five longest, on the same club.

And Nikolaj Ehlers, who took the 5th-most shots per 60 of any forward in the league and was the only forward on the roster whose ice beat its expectation in both directions, played eighteen minutes a night.

How they were used

2021-22 · 82 games

Measured from shift charts at five-on-five, not projected. Units are built from the strongest partnership outward and ordered by how much they were used; the percentage is the share of the first player’s five-on-five ice time spent alongside each linemate. A low number means the club never settled on a combination. Players who have gone are marked — either to another club, or off an NHL roster altogether, which covers retirement and an unsigned summer alike.
