Ask the book

2023-24 edition Ask a direct question about this edition of the book — who, how many, how common, which group more — and it is answered with a table computed on this page from the edition’s index: the season line, height and age, the on-ice percentiles, the grades and the traits read out of every report. Ask for a view on named players — what a comparison comes down to, what makes a man — and you get the book’s reading of their own pages, and only those. The model turns your question into a query and phrases the result, or reads the pages it is handed; it never originates a figure, and an answer carrying a figure that is on neither the table nor the pages is withheld. It does not forecast, and it says so when a question is outside what the book holds.

Tables are computed on this page from the 2023-24 edition’s index; readings rest on the players’ own pages; the model never counts. Twenty questions an hour.

Who this names 9 of 22 on the roster · 39% of their five-on-five minutes details

Both columns above are searched, and a name counts on the same terms the page links it: in full always, by surname only when one man in the edition wears it. Nothing here says who ought to be named — only who was, so the weighting can be seen rather than guessed at.

Not named here: Mason Appleton, Morgan Barron, Dylan DeMelo, Brenden Dillon, Nikolaj Ehlers, David Gustafsson, Axel Jonsson-Fjallby, Vladislav Namestnikov, Nino Niederreiter, Cole Perfetti, Neal Pionk, Dylan Samberg, Nate Schmidt.

What the Quant Says

46-33-3, 95 points, 14th in the league and fourth in the Central.

247 goals for, 21st. 225 against, 7th. Eleventh in shot-attempt share, 13th in chance share, 13th at creating chances at even strength, 11th at suppressing them, 22nd on the power play and 20th on the penalty kill.

At five-on-five: 158 goals scored against 169.9 expected, and 147 conceded against 157.5. The finishing was 26th at minus-11.9 and the goaltending 8th at plus-10.5.

Winnipeg lost the first round to Vegas in five.

That is a club that played better than it scored and was rescued by its goaltender. Eleventh in attempts and twenty-first in goals is a finishing problem, and the twelve goals it cost were almost exactly cancelled by the ten the crease saved.

Josh Morrissey had 76 points and 60 assists, a career high by 39. Mark Scheifele scored 42 goals on 206 shots. Connor Hellebuyck posted the fourth-best save percentage in this book across 64 games. Adam Lowry took the 3rd percentile of zone starts and wears the C.

Gabriel Vilardi, Alex Iafallo, Rasmus Kupari and Laurent Brossoit arrive. Pierre-Luc Dubois, Blake Wheeler, Kevin Stenlund, Saku Maenalanen and David Rittich do not.

A first-line centre and the captain of the previous decade both left in one summer, and what came back was the Los Angeles return for one of them. This is a club with the best goaltender in the league, a defenceman who has just had the season of his life, and no obvious way of scoring more than two hundred and fifty goals.

What the Scout Says

The fourth-best save percentage in this book, sixty assists from a defenceman, and the twenty-sixth-best finishing in the league.

Winnipeg was 11th in shot-attempt share and 21st in goals for. Its finishing was 26th at minus-11.9 and its goaltending 8th at plus-10.5. Connor Hellebuyck has a career .9163 across 445 games.

The play was better than the record and the goaltending was better than both. What this roster does not have, now that its second centre and its captain have gone, is a second way to score.

How they were used

2022-23 · 82 games

Measured from shift charts at five-on-five, not projected. Units are built from the strongest partnership outward and ordered by how much they were used; the percentage is the share of the first player’s five-on-five ice time spent alongside each linemate. A low number means the club never settled on a combination. Players who have gone are marked — either to another club, or off an NHL roster altogether, which covers retirement and an unsigned summer alike.
