Ask the book

2024-25 edition Ask a direct question about this edition of the book — who, how many, how common, which group more — and it is answered with a table computed on this page from the edition’s index: the season line, height and age, the on-ice percentiles, the grades and the traits read out of every report. Ask for a view on named players — what a comparison comes down to, what makes a man — and you get the book’s reading of their own pages, and only those. The model turns your question into a query and phrases the result, or reads the pages it is handed; it never originates a figure, and an answer carrying a figure that is on neither the table nor the pages is withheld. It does not forecast, and it says so when a question is outside what the book holds.

Tables are computed on this page from the 2024-25 edition’s index; readings rest on the players’ own pages; the model never counts. Twenty questions an hour.

The read

the numbers, and the eye

Ninety-nine points, fifth at creating chances and twenty-second at finishing them — so the club bought eighty-two goals in two thirty-four-year-olds.

Who this names 12 of 23 on the roster · 61% of their five-on-five minutes details

Both columns above are searched, and a name counts on the same terms the page links it: in full always, by surname only when one man in the edition wears it. Nothing here says who ought to be named — only who was, so the weighting can be seen rather than guessed at.

Not named here: Alexandre Carrier, Dante Fabbro, Mark Jankowski, Jeremy Lauzon, Jake Lucchini, Michael McCarron, Tommy Novak, Juuse Saros, Colton Sissons, Cole Smith, Scott Wedgewood.

What the Quant Says

47-30-5, 99 points, 11th in the league.

This is a better hockey club than eleventh. Sixth in the league at creating chances, ninth in shot share, eighth in chance share, eighth on the penalty kill — and twenty-second at finishing, which cost it eight goals at five-on-five, and sixteenth on a power play that takes the fourth-most time in hockey.

269 goals for and 248 against. The shortfall is entirely conversion, at even strength and a man up, and the response was one of the most aggressive summers in this edition.

Steven Stamkos arrives with 555 career goals and 1,082 games. Jonathan Marchessault arrives undrafted with 230 goals in 638 games, having scored 42. Brady Skjei arrives with 47 points from the blue line. Eighty-two goals and forty-seven points bought in one summer, and the average age of the three is 33.

It leaves Nashville with the fourth-oldest roster in this edition. Steven Stamkos is 34, Ryan O'Reilly 33, Luke Schenn 34, Roman Josi 34, Gustav Nyquist 35 and Jonathan Marchessault 33. Four of the likely top six forwards are 33 or older. The bet is that this group has two seasons in it, and the club has spent everything on those two seasons.

What the Scout Says

A very good possession club that could not finish, which has responded by buying two of the best finishers of the last decade at the age they stop finishing.

Filip Forsberg scored 48 goals and has 287 in 698 games. Roman Josi has 686 points in 909 games at a career 24:52 a night. Steven Stamkos has 555 goals and 1,137 points in 1,082 games. Ryan O'Reilly has 771 points in 1,073.

Two men with more than a thousand games each, a defenceman with nine hundred, and Luke Schenn four short of a thousand. Against that: Luke Evangelista is 22, Philip Tomasino is 23, Juuso Parssinen is 23 and Spencer Stastney is 24, and none of the four has taken a job from anybody yet.

How they were used

2023-24 · 82 games

Measured from shift charts at five-on-five, not projected. Units are built from the strongest partnership outward and ordered by how much they were used; the percentage is the share of the first player’s five-on-five ice time spent alongside each linemate. A low number means the club never settled on a combination. Players who have gone are marked — either to another club, or off an NHL roster altogether, which covers retirement and an unsigned summer alike.
