Four goals of finishing above what the chances were worth and level at the other end. Sixty-nine points at 33 on the hard matchup, with the fourteen power-play goals the largest total on the club.
The Finesse Game
180 shots at a median of 18 feet with 54 per cent from inside 20 and 9 per cent from beyond 40, converted at 14.4 per cent against a career 11.81.
489 career assists in 1,073 games. That shot chart is a centre who scores from the paint and nowhere else, and at 33 it is the correct adaptation. He is the best passer on this roster and he has been for a decade.
The Physical Game
He is 6-1 and 207 and protects the puck below the goal line as well as anybody in the league.
170 career penalty minutes in 1,073 games is one of the lowest rates in hockey for a centre who has always taken the hard assignment. He takes the defensive-zone draw, kills penalties, and has 11 career shorthanded goals.
The Intangibles
A second-round pick in 2009 out of Clinton, Ontario, fifteen seasons across five organisations, and 771 points in 1,073 games. He has a Selke Trophy, a Conn Smythe and a Stanley Cup.
He is 33 and had 69 points. The feet went five years ago and nothing else has, and a centre who can still take the matchup at this age is worth more than the scoresheet says.
